On a day when West Ham United did their part elsewhere, Everton failed to rise to the occasion, ending the campaign in 13th place after a run of poor results that saw them lose four of their final six matches.
What had once looked like a possible late push for European qualification quickly collapsed into mid-table mediocrity.
The Toffees were once again blunt in attack and disjointed in play, failing to register a single shot on target until deep into stoppage time. Their only real effort on target came late from Tyrique George, one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise dull display. Defensive lapses also proved costly, with Everton conceding yet again from a set piece in a pattern that has haunted them all season.
Fans’ frustration has grown over what many see as a lack of clear identity, structure, and ambition. Questions were raised over team selection, including the decision to drop top scorer Beto, while others pointed to Everton’s inability to build consistent attacking patterns or control games.
Tottenham, meanwhile, needed just one goal to secure the win and comfortably complete a league double over Everton. Despite some early pressure from Spurs, Everton offered little resistance for most of the match and only showed urgency in the dying moments, when it was already too late.
Spurs dominated possession throughout, creating several chances as Everton struggled to clear their lines and maintain control in midfield. Players such as Tim Iroegbunam, Merlin Röhl, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Iliman Ndiaye were repeatedly guilty of sloppy passing and poor retention in key moments.
The result capped off a frustrating season that had briefly promised more, especially after strong spells earlier in the campaign. However, Everton’s form collapsed in the final stretch, leading to renewed scrutiny on Moyes’s future at the club.
Tension peaked after Moyes was questioned about the club’s direction and fan frustration. When asked if he understood the supporters’ anger, he replied bluntly:
“I don’t really understand. No.”
The response sparked immediate backlash online, with many fans interpreting it as dismissive of growing concerns around the team’s decline.
When asked about progress for next season, Moyes insisted the club had taken steps forward despite the poor finish:
“We need to go again. We’ve made small steps in a good direction for long parts of the season… I thought we were for most of the season in a stronger position.”
However, supporters were unconvinced, pointing instead to what they see as stagnation, lack of clear tactical evolution, and missed opportunities to push into European places.
