However, one name has now emerged as the standout target and it is a player Moyes knows better than most.
According to reports from TEAMtalk, Everton are seriously exploring the possibility of bringing John Stones back to Merseyside this summer following uncertainty surrounding his future at Manchester City.
The England international, who was originally signed by Moyes from Barnsley in 2013, is approaching the final stage of his City career after an injury-hit campaign that limited his appearances last season.
Sources close to the situation suggest Moyes has personally held conversations with Stones over the idea of returning to Everton, with the veteran manager believed to have explained the important role he could play in the club’s new era.
The 31-year-old is said to be open to the idea of the reunion, especially given his strong relationship with Moyes and the emotional connection he still has with Everton after spending key early years of his career at Goodison Park.
While no formal agreement has been reached, Everton believe the player has reacted positively to the proposal and would seriously consider the move if an exit from Manchester City is finalised this summer.
Moyes reportedly views Stones as the perfect experienced leader to guide a developing Everton side into a new chapter at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with his composure, tactical intelligence and winning mentality seen as major assets for the dressing room.
Stones enjoyed enormous success after leaving Everton in 2016, winning multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League and several domestic trophies with City, while also becoming one of England’s most important defenders over the past decade.
But Everton know completing the deal will not be straightforward.
European giants including Bayern Munich, Napoli, Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid have all been credited with interest in the defender, while clubs in MLS are also monitoring his situation closely.
Still, Everton believe the emotional pull of a return, combined with Moyes’ direct involvement and the promise of a central role in the project, could give them a genuine chance of pulling off one of the most surprising Premier League reunions of the summer.
