Leicester City Fans Furious After EFL Releases Unforgivable Statement Following Will Smallbone’s Suffers Near Career-Ending Tackle, With Referee Refusing to Award a Penalty Despite a Clear Foul

Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat to Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on October 24 produced plenty of drama, with a disallowed goal, a disputed penalty incident and John Lundstram’s red card leaving both sides with major talking points.

However, the biggest controversy for Leicester supporters came when Luton midfielder Liam Walsh escaped conceding a penalty after his attempted overhead-kick clearance made contact with Will Smallbone inside the penalty area.

The incident occurred in the second half after goalkeeper James Shea had produced another important save to protect Luton’s lead. As the ball returned into a dangerous area, Walsh attempted an overhead kick, appearing to reach the ball before making contact with Smallbone.

Referee Martin Woods allowed play to continue, leaving Leicester without a penalty. The match report described Walsh as extremely fortunate to escape conceding a spot-kick, raising questions about whether the challenge endangered Smallbone.

Under the Laws of the Game, playing the ball first does not automatically excuse a dangerous challenge. If Walsh’s action endangered Smallbone and constituted a foul, Leicester would have been entitled to a penalty.

However, without reviewing the footage and obtaining an official explanation, it cannot be conclusively established that Woods made an incorrect decision.

The incident was not Leicester’s only frustration. Earlier, Emil Riis appeared to have given the visitors the lead after Kamari Doyle returned the ball into the danger area.

The goal was initially awarded before Woods consulted his assistant and ruled Riis offside, a decision the match report considered correct.

Luton subsequently took the lead through Nahki Wells in the 39th minute after Jordan Clark dispossessed Caleb Okoli and created the opportunity.

Leicester improved after half-time, but Shea continued making important saves to protect the hosts’ advantage.

The visitors suffered another setback when captain John Lundstram received a second yellow card for a lunging challenge on Izzy Jones in the 85th minute.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Leicester appeared to rescue a point when Riis set up Liam Cullen, who curled home a superb equaliser in the 90th minute.

However, Luton refused to settle for a draw. Substitute Callum Marshall struck in stoppage time after Emilio Lawrence’s deflected cross reached the six-yard box, securing a dramatic 2-1 victory.

While Luton deserved credit for their pressing, persistence and late winner, Leicester supporters will continue questioning the decision involving Smallbone.

Following the controversy surrounding Leicester City’s clash away to Luton Town, the EFL has reportedly acknowledged an officiating error over a penalty appeal involving Will Smallbone. The incident occurred after Luton Town’s Liam Walsh was involved in a challenge on the Leicester midfielder, sparking complaints from the visiting side over the decision not to award a spot-kick.

The statement comes amid growing backlash from Leicester City supporters, who believe their team did enough to secure a positive result from the encounter.

Earlier in the match, Emil Riis’ opener was ruled out in another contentious incident, further fuelling frustration among the Foxes faithful. The two decisions have placed the match officials under scrutiny, with questions continuing to emerge over the key moments that shaped the outcome.
