adminNewcastle United’s head of recruitment, Steve Nickson, will leave the club next month, bringing an end to a 15-year spell on Tyneside.
Nickson has played a key role in Newcastle’s recruitment over the years, overseeing several important signings. However, since Ross Wilson’s arrival as sporting director, his influence has diminished, with reports suggesting that Sven Botman’s signing was the last major transfer to significantly benefit from Nickson’s input.
After initially being linked with a move to West Ham United, Nickson was later reported to be heading to Championship side Wrexham.
Steve Nickson to join Wrexham in September
It has now been confirmed that Nickson will join Wrexham as the club’s first sporting director, becoming part of Ryan Reynolds’ ambitious project in North Wales.
According to Lee Ryder, Nickson will officially begin his new role on 2 September.

A new chapter after Newcastle
Nickson is expected to have a much greater level of responsibility and influence over recruitment at Wrexham than he currently enjoys at Newcastle.
His departure after the close of the summer transfer window also ensures he remains with Newcastle throughout the club’s transfer business, helping to keep internal plans in-house until the window shuts.
Nickson leaves Newcastle after 15 years of service, ending a long and significant chapter with the club as he embarks on a new challenge with Wrexham.
