Newcastle United have made steady progress in the summer transfer window, and even though Eddie Howe’s squad has been hit by several setbacks, the Magpies remain well-stocked for the future.

After a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that ended with a 12th-place Premier League finish, Howe will be expected to deliver a significant improvement this season.

Bruno Guimarães’ future remains a major talking point on Tyneside, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali already sold for a combined £169 million.

While Newcastle have maintained that both departures were necessary, replacing Gordon has become one of the club’s biggest priorities.

Why Newcastle cannot afford to get Gordon’s replacement wrong

Last summer, Newcastle sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a club-record £125 million. Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa arrived as his replacements, but both struggled to make the desired impact.

Gordon stepped up by playing several matches as a centre-forward throughout the campaign. Although he scored only six Premier League goals for the second consecutive season, the England international adapted well to his new role during a difficult year for Newcastle.

Losing both Isak and Gordon in successive summers is a significant blow, and failing to replace them adequately would seriously damage Howe’s long-term project.

Gordon developed into a reliable big-game player during his time at St James’ Park, highlighted by his impressive Champions League campaign last season.

Newcastle have already signed Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim for £43 million. The 20-year-old winger possesses huge potential but is still developing and faces the challenge of adapting to the Premier League.

As a result, Newcastle are still looking to add another attacker capable of playing a key role next season.

Newcastle in talks to sign their new Gordon

Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa are both expected to remain at Newcastle and compete for places despite difficult debut seasons. However, with Woltemade able to play in multiple positions, Howe is still keen to strengthen his attacking options with another striker.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are in talks with the representatives of Chelsea striker Liam Delap, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge before the summer transfer window closes.

Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million last year, but the move has not worked out. Manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly prepared to let him leave, with Everton currently viewed as the frontrunners for his signature.

Chelsea are believed to value the 23-year-old at around £40 million.

Although Delap scored only one Premier League goal for Chelsea last season, he previously netted 12 goals in 37 appearances for Ipswich Town during the 2024/25 campaign. Sky Sports reporter Lewis Jones previously described him as a “wrecking ball” of a striker.

Delap could become Howe’s version of Gordon—a young player whose reputation was built on potential before making the leap to a higher level. His physicality, hold-up play, and link-up ability make him a unique centre-forward.

Like Gordon, who left Everton for Newcastle in January 2023 for £45 million after scoring just seven goals in 78 senior appearances, Delap may simply need the right environment to fulfil his potential. Gordon eventually earned a £69 million move to Barcelona after helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup.

Despite his struggles at Chelsea, Delap has scored 13 Premier League goals over the past two seasons while missing only 14 big chances, suggesting he has the finishing ability to thrive with greater confidence.

If Howe can help him rediscover his best form, Newcastle could secure a prolific striker capable of replacing Gordon’s influence—and perhaps even surpassing it.

Delap may currently be at a low point in his career, but he remains one of England’s most exciting young attacking talents.

His performances at Ipswich demonstrated that he possesses the physical attributes and work rate required to succeed at a club like Newcastle, potentially becoming Howe’s new attacking talisman.
