SHOCKING: Newcastle Now Need a Completely New Starting XI After Major Setback

Newcastle United could be set for one of their biggest squad shake-ups in recent years as Eddie Howe prepares for a crucial summer transfer window while continuing to battle financial restrictions.

After a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that saw the Magpies finish 13th in the Premier League despite reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, major changes are now being discussed at St James’ Park.

Several first-team regulars have already been linked with moves away from the club, with Anthony Gordon having completed a switch to Barcelona.

Reports also continue to surround players such as Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães, Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, Harvey Barnes, Joelinton and Sven Botman, leaving uncertainty over the squad ahead of the new season.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Newcastle’s problems run much deeper than a few signings, claiming almost every position in the team has question marks.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said he looked through Newcastle’s starting XI and found concerns across the entire squad. He pointed to the uncertainty surrounding Livramento, Botman’s injury record, Dan Burn’s age, Harvey Barnes’ inconsistent role, Joelinton’s injury setbacks, and doubts over other members of the squad.

According to Brown, Newcastle almost need an entirely new starting XI rather than just one or two additions. He also argued that the club’s financial constraints have prevented the Saudi-backed owners from rebuilding the squad as quickly as they would have hoped.

Despite the disappointing campaign, Newcastle’s hierarchy have continued to back Howe ahead of the summer transfer window. However, the Magpies have already suffered a setback after reportedly missing out on highly-rated youngster Victor Muñoz, who opted to join Liverpool instead.

Howe still has significant credit in the bank following his achievements since arriving at Newcastle, but the coming months could prove decisive. Reports suggest the manager could come under serious pressure if the club makes another poor start to the new Premier League season.

With several first-team players facing uncertain futures and Financial Fair Play restrictions continuing to limit spending, this summer could define the next phase of Newcastle United’s project under Eddie Howe.
