Newcastle United have completed another major piece of their summer rebuild after reaching an agreement to sign one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking talents from Lille.
The Magpies have moved quickly to secure the deal, with the transfer understood to be worth around £52 million, bringing the highly-rated forward to St James’ Park as Matthias Jaissle continues to reshape his squad.
The arrival represents another significant investment from Newcastle, who have been extremely active in the transfer market this summer. The club have made it clear that they want to build a younger, more dynamic squad capable of competing at the highest level, and this latest signing fits perfectly into that vision.
The player at the centre of the deal is Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
The 21-year-old Belgian international enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Lille during the 2025/26 season, establishing himself as one of the club’s most important attacking players. He scored eight goals in Ligue 1 and demonstrated his versatility by operating across the front line.
That flexibility is believed to have been one of the major attractions for Newcastle.
Fernandez-Pardo can play as a centre-forward or from either wing, giving Jaissle another attacking option and the ability to change his setup depending on the opposition. Sky Sports has highlighted his explosive pace and power, with comparisons made to the qualities of Jeremy Doku.
Newcastle’s interest was not exactly a secret. The club had been following the Belgian for some time before stepping up their pursuit as the transfer deadline approached.
However, they were not alone in the race.
Several clubs were monitoring Fernandez-Pardo, with Arsenal among those reported to have shown serious interest. The competition made Newcastle’s eventual success even more significant, particularly with the player attracting attention after his impressive season in France.
What ultimately helped Newcastle get the deal over the line was the project being presented to the player.
Jaissle is understood to have played an important role in convincing Fernandez-Pardo that St James’ Park was the right destination for the next stage of his career. The Newcastle boss has been given a major say in the club’s recruitment strategy, and his plans for developing a young, energetic side appear to have impressed the Belgian.
Fernandez-Pardo had also made it clear that he wanted to leave Lille, despite having a contract with the French club until 2029. Lille eventually reached an agreement with Newcastle for a guaranteed €65 million, with a sell-on percentage also reported as part of the deal.
The move is therefore a major coup for Newcastle.
The Belgian now arrives on Tyneside with plenty of expectation surrounding him, but there is also a feeling that the Magpies have signed a player with enormous potential. His ability to play multiple attacking positions could prove particularly valuable throughout a long Premier League campaign.
For Newcastle supporters, this is another reason to be excited about what Jaissle is building.
After months of negotiations and competition from other major clubs, the deal is finally done.
Welcome to Newcastle United, Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
