Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has already identified one player who could play a hugely important role in his plans for the new season after being impressed by what he has seen during pre-season.

The Magpies are currently preparing for the 2026/27 campaign under their new manager, with Jaissle taking charge following Eddie Howe’s departure.

There has been plenty of change around St James’ Park this summer, with several important players leaving the club and a number of new faces arriving as Newcastle look to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

However, amid all the changes, Yoane Wissa could be emerging as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the new era.

The Newcastle forward has impressed during pre-season, with his movement, energy and attacking instincts catching the attention of the new head coach.

And after Wissa’s impressive display against Valencia, where he scored twice to secure a 2-1 comeback victory for Newcastle at the Mestalla Stadium, confidence surrounding the striker has grown significantly.

Jaissle’s new-look Newcastle side showed plenty of attacking intent during the match, but it was Wissa who ultimately provided the decisive moments.

His performance has now sparked suggestions that the 29-year-old could become a key figure in Jaissle’s plans for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

One Newcastle supporter summed up the growing excitement surrounding Wissa, saying:

🗣️ “Wissa might genuinely be the ideal striker for me.”

The striker also appeared to be enjoying life under the new manager, with another observation highlighting his positive attitude during training.

🗣️ “He looked lively and happy in training.”

That change in confidence could prove crucial for Newcastle.

Wissa arrived at Newcastle with significant expectations, but the new system and tactical ideas being introduced by Jaissle could give him the platform to produce his best football.

There is also growing belief that he could become a prolific goalscorer for the Magpies.

One prediction has already caught the attention of Newcastle supporters:

🗣️ “I think he would do better than Isak. He will score many goals this season.”

While comparing Wissa with Alexander Isak will inevitably create debate among supporters, the early signs under Jaissle are certainly encouraging.

Newcastle have experienced considerable turnover this summer, with major players including Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali leaving the club, while Anthony Gordon also departed earlier in the window.

That means Jaissle will need new leaders and match-winners to emerge from within his squad.

Wissa now has an opportunity to become exactly that.

The forward’s two-goal performance against Valencia was particularly significant because it came in Jaissle’s first match in charge. Newcastle recovered from falling behind to claim a 2-1 victory, giving the new manager an ideal start to his reign.

Although pre-season results should never be taken as a definitive indication of what will happen during a Premier League campaign, individual performances can provide important clues.

And Wissa appears to be sending one very clear message.

He is ready.

With Newcastle’s first Premier League match of the 2026/27 season against Liverpool at St James’ Park on 23 August, Jaissle now has only a short period to finalise his plans.
