Newcastle United have officially submitted a bid for Premier League star Archie Gray.

The Magpies have made a surprise offer for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder as discussions surrounding Sandro Tonali continue, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Manager Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen his squad at St James’ Park, and Gray is understood to be among the players being considered.

The 20-year-old’s ability to play in both midfield and defence would provide Newcastle with valuable versatility.

However, Tottenham have made it clear that Gray is not for sale and have no intention of parting with the highly-rated England youth international in the near future.

Tottenham have reiterated their stance following the bid, with no agreement reached between the two clubs at this stage.

Sources indicate that Newcastle remain interested, while Spurs’ position remains unchanged for the time being.

It remains unclear whether Newcastle plan to return with an improved offer, but Tottenham are unlikely to entertain any proposals.

The North London club are interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, although the Magpies are reportedly demanding around £100 million for the Italian international.

It is also unclear whether Newcastle would consider a player-plus-cash deal involving Gray and Tonali, but reports suggest they are reluctant to sanction the midfielder’s departure.

Last season, Gray made 35 appearances for Tottenham, scoring two goals and providing three assists while featuring in both central midfield and at left-back.

Having joined Tottenham from Leeds United in 2024, Gray has since made 81 appearances for the club. Prior to that, he made 52 first-team appearances during his breakthrough season at Elland Road.

Gray is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the Premier League, which explains Newcastle’s interest and Tottenham’s determination to keep hold of him.
