CONFIRMED: Newcastle United Free Up Over Half a Million Pounds Weekly After Seven Major Departures

The Magpies have struck a significant amount from their wage bill this week.

Newcastle United slashed more than half a million pounds from their weekly wage bill on Wednesday after six players officially departed the club.

Wednesday, July 1, marked the official start of the 2026/27 season, meaning players whose contracts expired at the end of June are no longer under contract at Newcastle United.

The Magpies announced earlier this year that six first-team players — Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and loan goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, whose temporary spell from Southampton has now ended — would depart the club this summer.

Following Anthony Gordon’s reported £69 million transfer to Barcelona, Newcastle have now removed seven contracts from their wage bill, creating significant financial flexibility ahead of their summer rebuild.

According to estimated salary figures from historical contract database Spotrac, Gordon was earning around £150,000 per week at Newcastle and was the club’s second-highest earner behind Bruno Guimarães.

Trippier was reportedly earning £120,000 per week, while Newcastle were also covering Aaron Ramsdale’s estimated £120,000 weekly salary during his loan spell from Southampton.

Matt Targett was believed to be earning £60,000 per week, Emil Krafth approximately £55,000 per week, and veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy around £15,000 per week. No reliable salary figure is publicly available for Max Thompson.

Excluding Thompson’s undisclosed wages, Newcastle are therefore saving an estimated £520,000 per week in salaries from this week onwards.

Further savings could follow through additional departures. The club also confirmed the latest loan exit of goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, although the proportion of his wages being covered by Sevilla remains unclear.

Newcastle supporters will hope those savings are reinvested into the playing squad, although the club must remain mindful of both the Premier League’s Squad Cost Ratio regulations and UEFA’s financial sustainability rules after receiving sanctions earlier this summer.

The Magpies have already completed the signing of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims and remain in the market for another goalkeeper, a right-back, a midfielder, a winger and potentially a striker during the current transfer window.
