Newcastle United could be considering a sensational reunion with former academy product James Tavernier, with the experienced right-back emerging as a surprise option for the Magpies this summer.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have explored Tavernier’s situation following his departure from Rangers, although there is currently no indication that a formal move to St James’ Park is imminent. The 34-year-old is attracting interest from several clubs after becoming a free agent, with his next destination still undecided.

Tavernier’s potential return would certainly capture the imagination of Newcastle supporters. The defender came through Newcastle’s academy before leaving the club in 2014, having made his senior debut for the Magpies. He subsequently built an outstanding career north of the border, becoming one of Rangers’ most important players and eventually their long-serving captain.
His time at Rangers came to an end this summer after 11 years at Ibrox. Tavernier confirmed in April that the 2025/26 campaign would be his final season with the Scottish giants, bringing the curtain down on an era in which he became a club legend.
The numbers underline just how significant his contribution was. Rangers confirmed that Tavernier made 565 appearances for the club and scored 144 goals during his remarkable spell. He also captained the side for eight years and helped Rangers win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup, while playing a major role in their run to the Europa League final.
Despite being 34, Tavernier remains an attractive option because of his experience, leadership and attacking qualities from right-back. His ability to contribute goals and assists has been one of the defining features of his career, making him a potentially useful squad option for a Premier League club looking for experience.
However, Newcastle are not alone in monitoring the situation.
Everton and Aston Villa have reportedly made direct enquiries regarding Tavernier, putting additional pressure on Newcastle if the Magpies decide to turn their interest into something more concrete.
Meanwhile, Charlotte FC are understood to be leading the race. TEAMtalk reports that the MLS club have stepped up their interest, with head coach Dean Smith said to be a long-time admirer of Tavernier and keen to bring the experienced defender to the United States.
That means Newcastle could face a difficult decision. While a return to Tyneside would carry enormous sentimental value, Tavernier could have several attractive options available to him, including opportunities outside England.
For Newcastle, the appeal would be more than simply nostalgia. Bringing back a player who understands the club and has accumulated more than a decade of high-level experience could provide valuable depth and leadership. At the same time, his age means any potential deal would have to make sense from a squad-building perspective.
For now, the Magpies’ interest appears exploratory rather than advanced, and Charlotte remain the reported frontrunners.
Nevertheless, the possibility of Tavernier walking back through the doors at St James’ Park would be one of the most unexpected stories of the summer transfer window.
After 11 years away from Newcastle, could the former academy product really make a dramatic return to Tyneside?
Newcastle supporters will certainly be watching closely as Tavernier weighs up the next chapter of his career.
