Newcastle United have reportedly revived their interest in Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini as the club continue their search for defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window. Competition is expected, however, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also joining the race for one of Serie A’s highest-rated young defenders. The latest developments suggest several Premier League clubs are now tracking the Italian international.
The Magpies have followed Scalvini for more than a year, and a fresh report from The Sun claims they have already contacted the 22-year-old’s representatives. That contact is said to be part of Newcastle’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their defensive options as they continue assessing possible additions before the transfer window closes.

According to The Sun, Newcastle have also approached the player’s camp to discuss the financial framework of a potential deal. The report further states that the club’s sporting director has been briefed on the situation as discussions continue behind the scenes regarding a possible transfer.
Scalvini has emerged as one of the most sought-after young defenders in Serie A, with Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham all reportedly monitoring his situation as they weigh up potential moves.
According to The Sun, Newcastle’s interest is shared by two Premier League rivals. The report states: “Giorgio Scalvini has emerged as a top defensive target for three Premier League clubs. SunSport understands that Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle are closely monitoring the Atalanta centre-back and have directly approached his representatives to enquire about a deal.”
The report indicates that all three clubs have made enquiries with Scalvini’s representatives as they seek more information about the possibility of completing a transfer. Newcastle’s approach is therefore part of a wider battle involving Chelsea and Tottenham, with each club reportedly assessing the defender as a summer target.
Transfer valuation also remains a key part of the discussions. After Tutto Atalanta reported the Serie A side’s willingness to part ways with Scalvini for around £39 million, The Sun claims Atalanta will only listen to offers of around £42 million as interest continues to build.
Despite that reported asking price, Newcastle are said to be considering an opening bid worth approximately £34 million. Whether that figure would be enough to begin formal negotiations remains unclear, but it reflects the club’s reported interest in testing Atalanta’s stance over the defender.
According to The Sun, Scalvini is interested in playing in the Premier League, increasing the likelihood of a move to England. While Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham remain interested, any transfer will ultimately depend on the clubs reaching an agreement with Atalanta.
The Sun adds: “It is understood that Scalvini wants a move to the Premier League, which means personal terms are not expected to be an issue.” That claim suggests the player would be open to joining an English club if a transfer fee can be agreed.
Newcastle’s recruitment team are also said to have a clear profile in mind during their search for defensive reinforcements. According to The Sun, the club are targeting a young centre-back capable of making an immediate impact while also offering significant long-term potential, with Scalvini fitting that profile.
The defender also brings notable experience despite still being only 22 years old. He reportedly made 30 appearances in all competitions for Atalanta last season and has already earned eight senior international caps for Italy, further explaining why Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham all view him as one of the standout young defenders available this summer.
