Newcastle United are in the midst of their summer rebuild, with a busy transfer window already unfolding in terms of both arrivals and departures.

After Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and loan goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale all departed the club, United have since sold both Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

But Newcastle have been busy in terms of incomings too, securing the signatures of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim and midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.

The Magpies are still in the market to sign another goalkeeper, a full-back and at least one more midfielder, and that could lead to further high-profile departures this summer.

With that in mind, Chronicle Live has taken a look at which players could still leave the club before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Nick Pope

Pope has been Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper for the last four seasons, but he is fighting for his future this summer. For much of his time at St James’ Park, the England international has been one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers.

However, mistakes began to creep into his game last season, and Newcastle are believed to be looking for a more complete goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Jaouen has arrived, but there are doubts over whether the 20-year-old is ready to become Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper immediately, with his senior experience coming exclusively in Ligue 2.

As a result, the Magpies are expected to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper and, should one arrive, Pope could move on, with his boyhood club Ipswich Town continuing to be linked with a move.

Until then, he is expected to remain on Tyneside and could still play an important role during pre-season.

Joe Willock

When Johan Manzambi looked set to join Newcastle, it appeared he would be a direct replacement for Joe Willock, who is unlikely to be short of Premier League interest this summer.

The 26-year-old has been an excellent servant since arriving permanently in 2021 and delivered several important performances last season, most notably scoring against European champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

With Newcastle now exploring alternative midfield targets, Willock appears more expendable than Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey and new signing Sean Steur.

Jacob Murphy

Murphy is preparing for his tenth season as a Newcastle player and remains a valuable member of Eddie Howe’s squad.

However, with just 12 months left on his contract, a suitable transfer offer could persuade Newcastle to cash in.

Everton are reportedly interested in the former England Under-21 international, and it remains to be seen whether his long spell at St James’ Park will come to an end this summer.

The worst-case scenario

The biggest talking point surrounding Newcastle’s transfer window remains Bruno Guimaraes’ future amid continued links with Premier League champions Arsenal.

The Brazil international will turn 29 later this year and is reported to be open to a new challenge, although Arsenal are yet to make official contact with Newcastle.

Newcastle remain adamant that their captain is not for sale and hope Guimaraes will respect the club’s position should an offer eventually arrive.

The Magpies are planning for Guimaraes to remain at the club and lead their rebuild. However, if the worst-case scenario unfolds and he departs, Newcastle would almost certainly need to sign another midfielder to replace him.

Striker conundrum

Many observers still believe Newcastle need another striker, but with Will Osula, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade currently on the books, that appears unlikely unless one of them is sold.

Osula finished last season strongly but is still considered a raw talent. Wissa struggled with fitness during his first campaign at St James’ Park but impressed at the World Cup, scoring three goals in four appearances for DR Congo.

Meanwhile, Woltemade endured a difficult World Cup and an inconsistent second half of last season. Despite scoring 11 goals during his first campaign with Newcastle, the Germany international still appears to be searching for his best role within Eddie Howe’s squad.
