adminLiverpool made an enquiry to the representatives of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães earlier this summer as they continue to assess midfield options in the transfer market.
While much of Liverpool’s attention has been focused on other areas of the squad during the window, strengthening the midfield remains one of the club’s priorities.
The Reds have previously been linked with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, while Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi have also emerged as potential targets.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool contacted Guimarães’ representatives to explore the possibility of a move.
Speaking to The Redmen TV, Jacobs said:
«”There was an initial enquiry on the player side with Bruno Guimarães.”»
He added that Arsenal have since stepped up their interest in the Brazilian midfielder.
«”We know in the last 24 to 48 hours Arsenal are the ones that have actually put a number over his head.”»
Jacobs also explained that Liverpool’s approach never progressed beyond initial contact.
«”Liverpool just did what Manchester United did months back. They spoke with the agent, and that was it. I’m not aware that they’re progressing there either.”»
It is common practice for clubs to speak with a player’s representatives before making contact with the selling club in order to understand the player’s interest and overall situation.
Reports from The Athletic claim Arsenal recently made a verbal offer worth less than £60 million for Guimarães, but Newcastle rejected the proposal. The Magpies are determined to keep hold of their captain and have made it clear he is not for sale.
Despite that stance, it is easy to understand why Liverpool admire the Brazilian international.
At 28 years old, Guimarães offers leadership, Premier League experience and versatility. He is capable of winning possession, controlling the tempo of games and driving forward from midfield, making him an all-round option who can operate both as a deep-lying midfielder and in a box-to-box role.
His physical presence and work rate would also add qualities Liverpool have been looking to strengthen in midfield.
However, Guimarães turns 29 in November, which does not perfectly fit Liverpool’s recent transfer strategy of targeting younger players with long-term potential.
Jacobs believes Liverpool are more likely to pursue a younger midfield profile this summer, making links with players such as Alex Scott, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Adam Wharton appear more realistic at this stage.
As things stand, Liverpool’s interest in Guimarães has gone no further than an initial enquiry, with no advanced negotiations currently taking place.
