The Magpies remain keen to strengthen their goalkeeping department but are still disappointed after missing out on Johan Manzambi, who opted to join Aston Villa despite Newcastle’s strong interest.
Howe was aware that talks for Manzambi had intensified last week but also knew the deal would be difficult to complete, with fierce competition for the highly rated SC Freiburg midfielder. Newcastle are now assessing their options in several other positions as they look to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
Tarik Muharemović
The 23-year-old Bosnia international has reportedly been offered to Newcastle, according to reports in Italy, and he fits the club’s long-term recruitment strategy of signing young, promising talent.
Newcastle’s proposal for Manzambi was considered highly competitive, with the midfielder set to become one of the club’s highest-paid young players. A reported fee of around £49 million would also have represented a club-record sale for SC Freiburg.
However, Newcastle’s concerns about competition proved justified as Aston Villa ultimately secured the player’s signature. The Magpies continue to face challenges in attracting top talent without European football, while also working within a disciplined wage structure.
The same reports also link Sunderland, Leeds United and Bournemouth with Muharemović, although centre-back is not currently viewed as a priority position for Newcastle.
The Sassuolo defender is valued at around €40 million, with Juventus also monitoring the situation. The Turin club are believed to hold a clause that would entitle them to 50% of any future transfer fee, potentially giving them an advantage in negotiations.
Nick Pope
Nick Pope has returned to training on Tyneside and has been pictured alongside his teammates following a summer filled with speculation over his future.
The England international has been linked with Hull City, Ipswich Town and, more recently, newly promoted Coventry City after their attempts to sign Carl Rushworth stalled.
However, sources indicate that no formal approach has yet been made for Pope, who remains very much a Newcastle United player.
James Trafford
Attention is now turning to James Trafford as England’s World Cup campaign nears its conclusion.
The goalkeeper is yet to feature in the tournament but could still be called upon if England are involved in the third-place play-off.
Trafford has reportedly instructed his representatives to delay any decision on his future until after the World Cup. With a summer break expected to follow, he may look to finalise his plans before the new Premier League season begins.
The Manchester City goalkeeper is also admired by Aston Villa, whose pursuit could depend on the future of first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who is widely expected to leave Villa Park this summer. Newcastle remain interested, but another battle with Villa for a key transfer target cannot be ruled out.
