Roberto De Zerbi has sparked a furious reaction among Newcastle United supporters after making a controversial admission following Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to the Magpies.
Newcastle came away from the game with all three points after goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa secured a memorable victory for Matthias Jaissle’s side.
But rather than focusing solely on the result, De Zerbi’s post-match comments about mentality and the way football can change quickly have caught the attention of Newcastle fans.

The Tottenham boss admitted that finding the “right mentality” remains the biggest challenge facing his team, despite the significant changes he has already made to his squad.
“The biggest problem, the biggest challenge, the biggest target is to find the right mentality,” De Zerbi said.
“Unfortunately, you can’t buy the mentality in the transfer market or put many players inside.”
He then appeared to suggest that simply changing players does not guarantee immediate success, explaining that some teams can find their balance quickly while others need considerably more time.
“Football is like a magic thing. You can change many players in one transfer window and you can find the balance immediately, or you need more time.”
De Zerbi made it clear that he wants Tottenham to overcome those problems as quickly as possible.
“I would like to achieve this target quickly, as soon as possible, because it’s crucial to play football.”
Despite Tottenham’s back-to-back Premier League defeats, De Zerbi remained adamant that the club’s rebuilding project is heading in the right direction.
“The plan, the project of the club, what we are doing to rebuild a new team with new players, is a great plan, is a great project,” he added.
“I have no doubt about the result of this project.”
De Zerbi also insisted that Tottenham must use the Newcastle defeat as motivation and become stronger from the setback.
“We have to accept [the defeat] and be stronger to move on after this defeat.”
His comments are now likely to fuel plenty of debate among Newcastle supporters, particularly after the Magpies walked away with a convincing 2-0 victory.
