Newcastle United have reportedly stepped up their interest in two Inter Milan midfielders, with Davide Frattesi and Aleksandar Stankovic both emerging as potential targets for the Magpies this summer.
According to Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have been made aware of Frattesi’s potential availability, while the club have also enquired about highly-rated youngster Stankovic. The developments could give Newcastle another route to strengthen their midfield as they continue to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.

Frattesi appears to be the more realistic opportunity of the two. Inter are reportedly prepared to listen to offers for the Italy international, with his valuation understood to be around £26 million. Inter’s situation is partly connected to their desire to strengthen their own midfield, with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones reportedly remaining a target for the Italian giants.
Inter are believed to view the sale of Frattesi as one potential way of creating room and raising funds for further additions. Newcastle have now been informed that the 26-year-old could be available, putting the Premier League club in a position to consider whether a move would make sense.
Importantly for Newcastle, Frattesi is reportedly open to the possibility of moving to England. The midfielder has previously attracted interest from Premier League clubs, and his willingness to consider a move could make negotiations considerably easier.
Frattesi would also bring valuable experience to Newcastle’s midfield. The Italian international has spent much of his career competing at a high level in Serie A and European competition, while his energetic style and ability to arrive late in the box could add another dimension to Newcastle’s midfield.
However, the situation surrounding Stankovic is considerably more complicated.
Newcastle have also asked about the 21-year-old Serbian midfielder, who returned to Inter this summer after the club activated their buy-back clause from Club Brugge. Inter officially confirmed the permanent return of Stankovic, with the midfielder signing a contract running until June 2031.
The youngster enjoyed an impressive spell at Club Brugge, which attracted attention from several Premier League clubs. Newcastle have previously monitored his situation, with reports also linking Brentford with an interest. Sky Sport reported earlier this year that Stankovic’s priority was to remain at Inter and fight for his place in the first team.
That remains the biggest obstacle for Newcastle.
While the Magpies admire Stankovic and have made enquiries, Inter are determined to keep hold of the midfielder. The player himself is also understood to be keen on staying in Milan and establishing himself at the club where his father, former Inter star Dejan Stankovic, became a legend.
For Newcastle, the two situations therefore present very different possibilities.
Frattesi could represent an experienced and relatively attainable midfield addition for a fee in the region of £26m, while Stankovic would be a longer-term investment with considerable potential but far greater difficulty attached to any deal.
Newcastle’s interest in both players nevertheless underlines the club’s desire to continue strengthening in midfield. The Magpies are assessing several options, and an approach for either Inter player could develop further before the transfer window closes.
For now, Frattesi appears to be the name to watch most closely. Inter’s willingness to consider his departure, his reported £26m valuation and his openness to playing in England could all work in Newcastle’s favour.
Stankovic, meanwhile, remains a much tougher proposition, with Inter determined to retain the highly-rated youngster.
Newcastle could therefore have two Inter midfielders on their radar — but whether either player eventually arrives at St James’ Park remains to be seen.
