The club have officially confirmed a major squad overhaul, with several senior players now set to walk away as free agents once their contracts expire. Among the most high-profile exits are captain Ricardo Pereira, Patson Daka, Jordan Ayew and Jamaal Lascelles.
Ricardo Pereira’s exit had already been confirmed earlier this month, ending an eight-year spell at Leicester since his move from Porto in 2018. The 32-year-old made 220 appearances for the Foxes and was part of the team that lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield and Championship title.
“It has been eight years of highs and lows, and while it hurts to finish this way, I know I will look back with pride on the amazing moments we have shared.
“I always tried to give my best, through the good times and the difficult moments. I will always follow Leicester and I hope I will see us back where we belong soon.”
However, it is the broader list of departures that has divided opinion, with supporters questioning whether the club are making the right call by allowing experienced players to leave on free transfers during such a critical rebuild.
Alongside the senior exits, Wanya Marcal has also left after his contract expired which have sparked major reactions from the fans who are saying the club didn’t so enough to keep him.
While Jordan James, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Aribo, Dujuan Richards and Divine Mukasa have returned to their parent clubs following loan spells.
That brings the total number of first-team exits to 11 players as Leicester prepare for life in League One for only the second time in their 142-year history.
Despite the mass departures, the club have moved to secure some continuity within the squad by exercising contract options for academy graduates Henry Cartwright, Tommy Neale, Ryan Donnelly, Thomas Wilson-Brown and Reiss Khela.
Meanwhile, new contract offers have been tabled for Stevie Bausor, Harry French, Mirsad Ali, Bobby Amartey, Silko Thomas, Logan Briggs and Josh King.
Chris Popov is one of the notable academy departures after a strong loan spell at Morecambe, where he scored seven goals in 18 appearances, even though his performances stood out despite the club’s struggles.
Other youth players including Jake Donohue, Jahmari Lindsay, Alfie Fisken, Toby Onanaye and Olaoluwa Omobolaji will also leave the club as part of the wider reset.
Leicester’s relegation was confirmed after a 2-2 draw with Hull City at the end of April, ending a miserable campaign that had begun with promotion expectations but ended in back-to-back relegation disappointment.
The club are still searching for a permanent managerial solution after Gary Rowett’s short-term spell, with decisions expected to shape the direction of the rebuild.
Rowett summed up the situation after relegation, saying:
“The bigger picture is you don’t get relegated over three or four games, you get relegated over a season.
“We have to learn. I think the club have to accept this is the horrible part of the journey of a football club. This club won the Premier League not too many moons ago.
“That was an incredible high at the time for the fans, for everyone associated with the club. I think everyone saw that as an amazing achievement. I think we can be equally as disappointed with how poor this moment is.”
