The Leicester City squad will not blame the club for their relegation, Gary Rowett has said, despite the players collecting enough points to stay up.
Victory over Blackburn on the final day meant that, had City not received a six-point sanction for a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules, they would have remained in the Championship by the skin of their teeth.
Purely on points earned, Leicester would have finished 21st with 52 points, ahead of Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford, and Blackburn, with the latter separated only by goal difference. West Brom ended the campaign on 51 points but would have finished on 53 without their deduction.
However, Rowett insisted the squad accept responsibility for their failure, adding that they will not attempt to shift blame for the club’s drop into League One.
Many of the players are now expected to move on, with several set to leave the King Power Stadium following relegation.
Ricardo Pereira bid an emotional farewell on Saturday afternoon, and he is expected to be one of several departures this summer.
“Ricky, it was his last game, and it was nice to give him a fitting tribute,” Rowett said. “That was important, even in a poor season.”
Meanwhile, transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that defender Wout Faes is already regarded as a “new player” for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, amid ongoing negotiations to make his loan move permanent.
He claims a “done deal” is in place, with an agreement reached between Monaco and Leicester City to convert the loan into a permanent transfer. Tavolieri also adds that the 27-year-old will soon be officially announced as an AS Monaco player.
Faes had not featured for Leicester since November before joining Monaco on loan in January, signalling a likely exit after three years at the club.
Since arriving from Reims in 2022, the centre-back has made 135 appearances for the Foxes, experiencing two relegations alongside a Championship promotion under Enzo Maresca.
AS Monaco are currently in the top four of Ligue 1, meaning the 27-year-old would be moving from a difficult Championship campaign to Champions League football next season.
