HUGE BLOW for Man City! Newcastle begin talks to sign £52m star in shock move

Newcastle United have taken a significant step in their midfield rebuild by opening talks with Manchester City over a potential move for one of their high-profile midfielders.

The Magpies are looking to strengthen the centre of the pitch after a turbulent summer that has seen key players depart. Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have both left, leaving head coach Matthias Jaissle in need of additional quality and experience.

According to TalkSPORT, discussions are already underway between Newcastle and Manchester City regarding a potential deal for the 24-year-old midfielder.

Newcastle’s need for midfield reinforcements has become increasingly clear during pre-season. The club also saw an attempt to sign Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg collapse after the player decided against the move.

The Manchester City midfielder joined the club from FC Porto in January 2025 for a reported £52 million. He made 41 appearances across all competitions last season, but his opportunities became more limited during the second half of the campaign, when he managed just two starts.

City are reportedly willing to consider his departure as they look to generate funds for their own transfer plans, including potential moves for Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi.

However, the midfielder has previously made it clear that he is happy at Manchester City and wants to fight for his place. He also featured as a second-half substitute in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, suggesting he remains part of the squad while his future continues to attract attention.

For Newcastle, signing a player with Premier League experience would represent a major boost. The Magpies have already added several new faces this summer, including midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, but Jaissle is believed to want further experience in the position.

A move would also provide Newcastle with greater depth ahead of a demanding opening to the Premier League season. The Magpies begin their campaign against Liverpool before facing Tottenham, Bournemouth and Leeds United in the early weeks.

Manchester City, meanwhile, are undergoing significant changes under new head coach Enzo Maresca. The club are reshaping their squad and could sanction further departures as they look to create room for new arrivals.

For Newcastle, the opportunity to bring in a £52m-rated Premier League midfielder could be viewed as a statement of intent. The club are determined to rebuild their squad and remain competitive at the top end of English football.

With the transfer window entering its crucial final stages, negotiations could develop quickly. Newcastle will be hoping to avoid another late disappointment after the collapse of the Hojbjerg deal and secure the midfield reinforcement Jaissle believes his squad needs.

At this stage, no agreement has been reached, but the opening of talks represents an important development. If Newcastle can convince the player and Manchester City to reach an agreement, the potential move could become one of the most significant midfield transfers of the window.
