Abdulhafiz TeslimNewcastle United head coach Eddie Howe may not have spoken to the club’s newest signing yet, but there is no doubt he is looking forward to working with Bazoumana Toure.
The Magpies announced on Sunday that they had completed an undisclosed deal to sign the 20-year-old winger from German side Hoffenheim, and Howe expressed his excitement that the pacy attacker will be taking his talents to Tyneside this season.
“We’re really pleased to have been able to bring Bazoumana to Newcastle United,” Howe said in the club’s official press release announcing the deal.
“He has shown his ability to perform in a top European league during his time in Germany and has gained really valuable experience with his national team, especially at this summer’s World Cup.
“We feel that he’s a player with a really high ceiling. He’s somebody who we believe can offer us something different. He also has a lot of potential to unlock, and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”
It is Howe’s belief that Toure will offer Newcastle “something different” that really stands out. At times last season, Howe’s side were accused of being too formulaic and too predictable.
The fact that Toure is a speedy, direct winger not only suggests he fits Howe’s ideal profile, but it also eases concerns that Newcastle’s new left-sided option would simply offer more of the same.
That certainly is not Howe’s view, and it is not sporting director Ross Wilson’s either.
“At just 20 years old, he’s already a hugely exciting young talent who has progressed year on year,” Wilson said.
“We are sure there’s plenty more growth still to come—development we’re excited to nurture here at Newcastle.”
That should excite Newcastle supporters as well. Toure made an instant impact at Hammarby after moving to Sweden from his native Ivory Coast in 2024, scoring nine goals in his first season in European football.
He then followed that up with five goals and 12 assists in his first full season in Germany, helping Hoffenheim qualify for this season’s Europa League.
Toure is expected to join up with his new teammates before the end of the month, giving him a significant portion of pre-season to adapt to the demands of playing for Newcastle and under Howe.
So while there has been plenty of long-term talk about Toure’s high ceiling and the potential Newcastle hope to unlock, he has already shown at both Hammarby and Hoffenheim that he can adapt quickly to new surroundings and make an immediate impact.
That should not only ease any concerns but also give Newcastle fans every reason to be optimistic about what the exciting young winger can bring to St James’ Park.
