Newcastle United have reportedly rejected a late offer from Nottingham Forest for one of their longest-serving players, with the Magpies unwilling to accept the initial proposal as the transfer window moves towards its dramatic conclusion.
Forest have been working on strengthening their squad before the deadline and have identified a Newcastle player as a potential addition to their attacking options. However, their first attempt to get a deal over the line has not gone according to plan.
According to Craig Hope, Newcastle have turned down an offer worth around £10 million from Nottingham Forest.
The development comes at a particularly interesting time for Newcastle, with clubs across the Premier League rushing to complete their final pieces of business before the transfer window closes.
Forest’s interest had already emerged in recent days, with reports suggesting that Oliver Glasner’s side were considering a move for a player capable of providing experience, quality and versatility on the right side. Forest have been reshaping their squad and are looking for further options to give Glasner greater flexibility.
For Newcastle, however, the situation is not quite as straightforward as simply accepting the money.
The player in question is Jacob Murphy, a player who has spent almost a decade at St James’ Park and has become a familiar figure within the squad.
Murphy joined Newcastle from Norwich City in 2017 and, despite going through periods where his future appeared uncertain, he has managed to establish himself as an important member of the first-team group. The winger has also earned the affection of supporters, particularly because of his connection to the club and his boyhood support for Newcastle.
His importance was again demonstrated last season, when Murphy made 46 appearances across all competitions and contributed nine goal involvements.
That experience could be particularly valuable to Matthias Jaissle as he continues to shape his Newcastle squad.
The Magpies have already undergone significant changes this summer, with several familiar faces leaving while a number of new players have arrived. Losing another experienced squad member at this stage could leave Newcastle with less depth, especially if injuries begin to hit during the early part of the campaign.
There is also the question of whether £10 million represents enough value for a player who can still contribute at Premier League level.
Although Murphy is no longer viewed as an automatic starter, his ability to play different roles gives Newcastle another useful option. He can provide width, stretch opposition defences and offer a different attacking profile when games require a change of approach.
Forest’s interest, therefore, makes sense from their perspective. But Newcastle’s decision to reject the opening offer suggests that the Magpies are not simply prepared to let Murphy walk away for any fee.
With the deadline approaching rapidly, the situation could still develop.
Forest may decide to return with an improved proposal in an attempt to test Newcastle’s resolve, while Newcastle themselves must decide whether keeping Murphy is more valuable than bringing in another transfer fee.
For Murphy, meanwhile, the coming hours could prove decisive.
A move away from St James’ Park would bring the end of a long chapter for the 31-year-old, but Newcastle’s latest decision has made one thing clear: Forest will have to do more if they want to prise him away from Tyneside.
The £10 million offer has been rejected, but with the transfer deadline fast approaching, this may not be the final twist in the Murphy story.
