The Magpies have already balanced their books through high-profile departures, most notably Sandro Tonali’s club-record £100 million (€108m) move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Following Tonali’s exit and Newcastle’s failure to land SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, who opted to join Aston Villa instead, the club has intensified its search for midfield reinforcements.
Newcastle have now moved swiftly to secure the signing of AS Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba in a deal worth up to £34 million.
The 20-year-old French talent is travelling to Tyneside after the Magpies reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 side and is set to undergo a medical before completing the final formalities of his transfer 24 hours after rejecting offer from Real Madrid.
If all goes according to plan, Bamba will become Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer, continuing the club’s recruitment strategy of investing in young, high-potential players from outside the Premier League.
He will join fellow arrivals Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, and Sean Steur from Ajax, with all four recruits aged 20 or younger.
The France Under-20 international enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, making 25 appearances across Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the UEFA Champions League.
Newcastle had previously been linked with fellow Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara but ultimately turned their attention to Bamba.
Operating primarily as a defensive midfielder, Bamba is expected to strengthen Howe’s options in the heart of midfield following Tonali’s departure.
The Magpies remain determined to keep captain Bruno Guimarães despite continued speculation linking him with Arsenal. Reports suggest the Brazilian has agreed personal terms with the Gunners, but Newcastle are frustrated by Arsenal’s failure to submit a formal club-to-club offer and remain unwilling to negotiate for anything less than their £80 million valuation.
Alongside Bruno Guimarães, Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey, Joelinton, Sean Steur and the incoming Bamba, Newcastle believe they will have a strong and well-balanced midfield for the upcoming campaign.
Meanwhile, Joe Willock’s future remains uncertain. The 26-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at St James’ Park, with Turkish giants Besiktas actively working to finalize a deal after opening negotiations in Istanbul.
Should Willock depart, Bamba’s arrival would provide Newcastle with another important option as Eddie Howe continues to reshape his squad this summer.
