Reports from top journalists, including Fabrizio Romano, confirm that Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign the Italian midfielder, despite ongoing negotiations still being required to complete the deal.
Spurs have already tested Newcastle’s resolve with an £80 million bid, but the offer was firmly rejected by the Magpies. Even so, Tonali is now said to have given his approval to a potential move to North London, bringing him closer than ever to a Premier League switch.
Tonali says ‘YES’ as Tottenham move closer
The situation has now escalated rapidly, with Sky Sports reporting that Tonali is “ready” to make the move to Tottenham.
A massive contract worth more than £275,000 per week is reportedly prepared and waiting for him to sign, which would instantly make him the highest-paid player at Spurs.
That wage would place him above current top earners Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons, who both earn around £195,000 per week.
However, the transfer is still not complete, as Tottenham and Newcastle continue negotiations following the rejected £80 million offer.
At this stage, the deal now depends entirely on both clubs reaching an agreement.
Arsenal out of the race as Spurs take control
Earlier reports suggested Arsenal could hijack the deal, with Tonali allegedly favouring a move to the Emirates if they entered the race.
But reliable sources, including David Ornstein, have now clarified that Arsenal are not pursuing the midfielder this summer.
Instead, the Gunners are focusing on other targets, including Bruno Guimarães, leaving Tottenham in pole position.
As it stands, Spurs are leading the race uncontested, and Newcastle face the very real possibility of losing one of their key stars.
