With Manzambi now on the verge of joining Aston Villa, Newcastle have been forced back into the market in search of another creative box-to-box midfielder.
One name that has quickly emerged as an ideal alternative is Bayer Leverkusen’s exciting young star Ibrahim Maza.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign, registering five goals and seven assists in 44 appearances while establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest young midfielders. He also impressed on the international stage with Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further enhancing his growing reputation across Europe.
Maza has been widely praised for his technical ability, creativity and dribbling, with many observers describing him as “a joy to watch” and “a special talent.” His ability to carry the ball, create chances and influence games would make him an excellent fit for Newcastle’s midfield alongside Bruno Guimarães.
However, there is a significant obstacle.
According to reports, Bayer Leverkusen are reluctant to lose one of their most promising young players, with Maza under contract until 2030. That means any club hoping to sign him would likely have to pay a substantial transfer fee, making a deal extremely difficult this summer and the player only willing to play for a champions League club.
With Newcastle already missing out on Manzambi after Aston Villa’s late hijack, supporters fear another lengthy pursuit could end in disappointment if the club cannot convince Europe’s top young talents that St James’ Park remains the right destination.
If a move for Maza proves impossible, Newcastle could instead turn their attention to Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.
The England international has been linked with a possible move away from Anfield in search of more regular first-team football. At 25, Jones offers Premier League experience, energy, technical quality and the versatility to thrive in Eddie Howe’s high-intensity system.
After losing out on one priority target, Newcastle now face a crucial decision. Whether they pursue Ibrahim Maza, Curtis Jones or another midfielder, the Magpies must respond quickly to avoid another frustrating chapter in what has already become a challenging transfer window.
