Leicester City’s difficult start to life in League One has continued to raise questions about the direction of the club, with Russell Martin under pressure to find consistency and get the best out of his squad.
The Foxes have endured a frustrating campaign, with defensive mistakes, disappointing results and uncertainty surrounding several players adding to the growing concerns among supporters.
Despite showing occasional signs of improvement, Leicester still have plenty of work to do if they are to turn their season around.
Their recent 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers at the King Power Stadium offered some relief after the damaging 3-1 defeat to Peterborough United. However, with another important fixture against Bromley approaching on October 20, attention remains on Martin’s decisions, his squad selection and the players struggling to secure regular opportunities.
One Leicester City defender, in particular, continues to face an uncertain future after a proposed summer move abroad collapsed at the final hurdle.
Despite remaining at the club, questions persist over his role and whether he can establish himself under the current manager.
Woyo Coulibaly remains at Leicester City after his proposed deadline-day move to Genoa fell through, but the right-back has yet to establish himself as a regular under Martin.
The Mali international was expected to leave during the summer transfer window, only for the deal to collapse after Leicester reportedly attempted to change its terms. Genoa subsequently turned their attention to Cody Drameh, leaving Coulibaly at the King Power Stadium.

His situation has since become a talking point, particularly given his limited involvement in Leicester’s League One campaign.
Coulibaly was absent from the matchday squad for several early-season fixtures, including games against MK Dons, Oxford United and Stockport County. He also missed the opening-day trip to Notts County and Leicester’s August fixture against Burton Albion.
The defender eventually featured in the Carabao Cup defeat to Ipswich Town on August 25, playing 74 minutes before being forced off with cramp.
Martin later explained that Coulibaly had experienced cramp towards the end of the match, offering an explanation for his absence from the following league fixture.
He returned in September, playing 45 minutes against Barnsley in a 1-1 draw before featuring in Leicester’s 6-1 EFL Trophy victory over Fulham Under-21s.
Coulibaly also started the 2-1 defeat to Stevenage on October 6, completing the match, but was not named in the starting XI for the subsequent 3-1 loss to Peterborough United.
‘If I were him, I would have LEFT’
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, comments about the defender have added another dimension to the situation, with his loyalty to Leicester becoming a key part of the discussion.
“He is a spectacular guy, and it’s easy to have a good relationship with him. I spend a few minutes alone with him every single day.”
The comments painted a picture of a player who has maintained a positive relationship with those around him, despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his future.
“If I were him, I probably wouldn’t still be here. I would have pushed for a move to a country where I’d be respected.”
The statement raises questions about why a player in such a position would choose to remain at a club where regular opportunities have proved difficult to secure.
“But out of loyalty to Leicester and love for the club, he stayed.”
That loyalty could prove important as Martin continues to assess his defensive options, although it remains to be seen whether Coulibaly can turn his commitment into a more prominent role on the pitch.
Coulibaly faces competition from several defenders as Martin attempts to build a settled team capable of producing more consistent performances.
Luke Thomas has featured regularly, while Christian McFarlane and other defensive options have also been involved throughout the campaign.
Although Coulibaly offers another option at right-back, his limited league involvement has prevented him from establishing himself as a first-choice option.
His appearances suggest that he has not been completely frozen out, but there remains a considerable difference between receiving occasional minutes and becoming a regular starter.
With Leicester attempting to recover from an inconsistent start to their League One campaign, Martin must decide whether the defender can provide what the team needs or whether other options are better suited to his plans.
As of October 18, Coulibaly remains a Leicester City player, with his proposed move to Genoa having failed to materialise.
The defender will hope to earn further opportunities as Leicester prepare to face Bromley on October 20. Any minutes he receives could provide another chance to demonstrate that he deserves a more consistent role.
For Martin, the challenge is to find the right balance within his squad while attempting to improve Leicester’s results.
There has been no confirmed announcement that Leicester intend to sell Coulibaly again or that Martin has decided to exclude him permanently from his plans.
Nevertheless, with his future still uncertain and competition for places remaining strong, the coming weeks could be important in determining what happens next for the defender.
For a player who reportedly remained out of loyalty to the club, the biggest question now is whether that loyalty will eventually be rewarded with the opportunities he has been seeking.
