Ruthless Russell Martin Unforgivingly Opens the Door for These 3 Leicester City Players, Including Starters In the miserable 2-1 defeat to Burton, to Leave His Team Imminently

Leicester City’s miserable start to the season has taken another worrying turn following their shocking 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion, with serious questions now being raised about the performances of several players and the strength of Russell Martin’s squad.

The defeat was a disastrous result for the Foxes, who suffered their first home league-opening defeat since 2011 and were beaten by Burton in the league for the first time in their history.

Leicester have now collected just one point from their opening two games, leaving supporters increasingly concerned about whether the team is capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge.

The situation became even more difficult when Oliver Skipp was sent off, forcing Leicester to play a large portion of the match with 10 men. Although the dismissal undoubtedly affected the game, the defensive problems had already become a major talking point.

Leicester attempted to control possession and build attacks from the back, but their play became predictable and they struggled to create enough attacking threat. The lack of width and the defensive uncertainty left supporters frustrated throughout the afternoon.

Martin had previously acknowledged that it would take time for his squad to fully gel, with some of Leicester’s attacking combinations already showing promising signs.

However, the defensive department remains the biggest concern.

“I already imagined the squad would take time to gel on the pitch,” one assessment stated. “You see some plays they try and if they’ve fine-tuned their coordination, it’s very promising, but the defence is our most critical area.”

The concern goes beyond simply a lack of understanding between the players.

“It’s not a lack of cohesion, it’s something more,” the assessment continued. “It seems like Okoli and Souttar are playing disconnected, only thinking about an opportunity to leave the club, and Thomas is being careless as always.”

Caleb Okoli and Harry Souttar have therefore come under particular scrutiny, while Luke Thomas has also been criticised for his defensive performances.

With Leicester hoping to compete near the top of the table, questions are now being asked about whether the current defensive options are good enough to support Martin’s system.

The criticism comes at a difficult time for the manager, who is attempting to establish a possession-based style while working with a squad that is still adapting to his methods.

There is still a long way to go this season, but the early results have already placed pressure on Martin. Leicester cannot afford for their defensive problems to continue if they want to challenge for promotion.

As one supporter bluntly put it, if the situation at the back is not resolved quickly, “it could be difficult to reach the playoffs.”

The Burton defeat has therefore done more than cost Leicester three points. It has exposed weaknesses that could force Martin and the club to make difficult decisions over the squad, particularly if certain players continue to struggle.
