Newcastle United have reportedly launched a €40 million bid for Galatasaray defender Wilfried Singo as Matthias Jaissle continues to shape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
According to a report from Turkish outlet Fotomaç, Newcastle have offered €40m for the Ivory Coast international, with negotiations between the two clubs reportedly continuing. If accurate, the proposal would represent a major investment in a defender Newcastle clearly believe could add strength and versatility to their back line.
However, the reported offer should be treated with some caution. Other Turkish reports have also linked Newcastle with Singo, but have described the €40m bidder only as an unnamed English club. At the time of writing, there is no major English confirmation that Newcastle have formally submitted a €40m proposal.
Nevertheless, Singo’s profile makes the speculation particularly interesting.
The 25-year-old is capable of playing as a centre-back and right-back, giving him the positional flexibility that could be extremely useful to Newcastle. He is known for his physical strength, athleticism and ability to cover significant ground, qualities that could suit Jaissle’s tactical demands.

The potential interest comes shortly after Newcastle completed the signing of Amar Dedić. The Bosnian defender can operate on both sides of the defence, meaning Newcastle are no longer desperately short of full-back options.
Singo, however, would provide something different.
Rather than simply being another specialist full-back, he could give Newcastle an additional centre-back who is also capable of filling in at right-back when required. That could allow Jaissle to maintain greater flexibility within his defensive structure throughout a long Premier League campaign.
Newcastle are believed to need a defender who can operate comfortably in a higher defensive line, and Singo’s physical attributes could make him an attractive candidate. His ability to defend one-versus-one situations and recover quickly could also be valuable when Newcastle commit players forward.
There is, however, one major concern surrounding the potential deal: Singo’s injury record.
Galatasaray previously rejected suggestions that the defender had a chronic injury problem, explaining that his absences had been caused by separate issues. More recently, Singo appeared to suffer a left hamstring problem while playing for Ivory Coast at the World Cup in June.
He returned to partial team training in August and was subsequently named on the bench for Galatasaray’s league opener against Çorum FK. He did not feature in that match, but his return to the squad suggests he is progressing towards full fitness.
Galatasaray would also have little reason to rush into a sale.
The Turkish giants paid around €30.77m to sign Singo from Monaco last summer, and the defender is tied to the club until 2030. Monaco are also reportedly entitled to 10 per cent of Galatasaray’s profit from a future sale.
A €40m offer would therefore give Galatasaray an immediate profit after only one season, but the length of Singo’s contract means the Turkish club remain in a powerful negotiating position.
For Newcastle, the attraction is obvious. Singo could provide additional centre-back depth, cover at right-back and a physically imposing option who could fit into Jaissle’s tactical system.
The question is whether Newcastle are actually prepared to pay €40m for him.
At this stage, the reported bid remains unconfirmed, and Newcastle supporters should wait for stronger sources before treating the transfer as a genuine breakthrough.
If the €40m offer is eventually confirmed, however, it would signal that Newcastle are serious about strengthening their defence before the transfer window closes — and Singo’s versatility could make him one of the more intriguing potential additions to Jaissle’s squad.
