Newcastle United have provided a fresh update on plans to introduce a new club crest after launching a fan consultation process last year.
The club has repeatedly stressed that the intention is to evolve the current badge rather than completely redesign it. While an early leaked concept drew criticism from supporters, Newcastle remain committed to the process.
The current crest has been in use since 1988, but the club believes it presents challenges in the modern era, particularly across digital platforms. According to Newcastle, the badge’s intricate details make it difficult to reproduce consistently and at high quality on broadcasts, merchandise and online.

In a detailed statement, the club explained:
> “Its complexity affects how we show up. Its intricacies and irregularities make consistent, high-quality reproduction impossible – from modern digital platforms, to broadcast environments and merchandise.”
An accompanying video released on the club’s official website outlines the reasons behind the proposed change and offers an indication of what the updated crest could look like.
Although many supporters were initially opposed to the idea, feedback from the consultation showed that fans are open to an updated design as long as it remains an evolution of the current badge rather than a complete overhaul.
Many also made it clear that they do not want the club to adopt a generic circular-style crest.
Newcastle have indicated they want to preserve the key features that make the badge unique, including the seahorses, castle turret, shield and ribbon, while modernising the overall design.
Eligible supporters will be invited to vote on their preferred option in early August. Voting will be open to men’s and women’s season ticket holders, Mags and Mags+ members as of 18 July 2026, as well as supporters who attended two or more Newcastle United Women’s matches during the 2025/26 season at Gateshead International Stadium.
