He warned that despite Leicester’s size, history, and resources, those advantages alone will not guarantee success in the third tier.
“You can clearly see that a change of culture is required on the playing field,” Rowett said. “From a recruitment perspective, we need to bring back that underdog mentality that was once so successful.
“It’s never easy, especially when a club has reached high levels before. But that hunger and desire must return if the team wants to get promoted.”
Rowett also confirmed that he has discussed the club’s future direction with the board, with a focus on shaping a squad capable of handling the physical and mental demands of League One football.
He believes a full rebuild is necessary, with strong leadership and clear decision-making required to avoid another difficult season.
“It’s a big rebuild. There’s clarity needed moving forward and conviction in decisions. That’s for the club to decide.”
The Leicester boss added that successful promotion campaigns often come through major squad turnover, with clubs that have bounced back quickly from relegation typically refreshing their playing group significantly.
Leicester are now expected to undergo a major overhaul this summer as they target an immediate return to the Championship.
Rowett is also understood to have expressed interest in being part of the rebuild process, with discussions over the next managerial appointment still ongoing.
