SKY SPORTS Confirms World-Class Player Has Already Said Goodbye to His Teammates and Joined Newcastle United Until June 2031 as Ross Wilson Releases Official Statement

Newcastle United have been one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs this summer, bringing in seven senior players. Their arrivals include Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim, Aladji Bamba from Monaco, Amar Dedic from Benfica, Lukas Hornicek from Braga, Sean Steur from Ajax and Ewen Jaouen from Reims.

The reported fees put their spending at around £224m, with Gonzalez the latest and biggest addition at around £50m.

The Magpies have also undergone a major squad overhaul, losing key figures including Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100m, Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75m and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m.

With more than £240m generated from major sales, Newcastle have significantly reshaped the squad under Matthias Jaissle. However, the club is still looking to strengthen its attack before the transfer window closes, with Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Bilal El Khannouss among the names being considered.

The deal for the 24-year-old midfielder is set to reach £50m after add-ons. He will wear the No 6 shirt at St James’ Park.

The midfielder said his goodbyes to his City team-mates on Tuesday morning before travelling to Newcastle and completed a medical on Wednesday, before he was presented to the club’s fans ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with West Brom.

The Spaniard has become Matthias Jaissle’s second signing as Magpies head coach after Amar Dedic joined last week.

Former Spain U21 international Gonzalez joined City from Porto in February 2025 and played 59 times for the club, scoring four goals.

‘He’s the one we wanted’

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Gonzalez had been the Magpies’ primary target, in a summer where they have lost Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to Arsenal and Tottenham, given his experience already with Barcelona, Porto and in the Premier League with Manchester City.

He said: “We’ve worked patiently on this transfer for a number of weeks. This was the one we wanted, and we’re delighted to welcome Nico to Newcastle United this evening. He was an ambitious target but following our discussions, he was so keen to join this club.

“He fits the exact criteria we set for this position and we weren’t prepared to compromise on that. He’s 24 years old, with an abundance of elite experience across Manchester City, FC Porto and Barcelona.

He’s already already shown his quality in the Premier League and we’re sure there is more to come here in a black and white shirt.”
