It was a summer of major change at Newcastle United. To say it was tough at times is an understatement, but it feels as though the Magpies have come out on the other side.
The Magpies sold three of their star players in Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, and also sanctioned the loan departure of £69million club-record signing to Nick Woltemade on deadline day.
Matthias Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe as head coach last month and the German has helped bring renewed optimism to Tyneside, along with the club’s eight summer signings, all of whom are under the age of 24.
Totalling in a £270million spend, Newcastle brought Ewan Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lukas Hornicek before Jaissle played a major role in the recruitment of Amar Dedic, Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Fears of a potential relegation battle have swiftly turned into European hopes following a strong start to the campaign that has saw Jaissle’s side draw with Liverpool on the opening day before beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 away last weekend.

So how will Newcastle perform this season? Premier League data experts Opta have predicted how the 2026-27 table will finish. Take a look below.
1. Opta Premier League table
2. Coventry City (20th) – 41 points
Coventry City face a difficult challenge on their return to the Premier League. Their summer activity will be tested heavily against the quality and depth of the division, and Opta expects them to struggle throughout the campaign.
3. Fulham (19th) – 41 points
Fulham have opted to strengthen their squad without making wholesale changes. However, Opta’s prediction suggests their summer recruitment may not be enough to keep them comfortably clear of the relegation places.
4. Ipswich (18th) – 44 points
Ipswich have made additions to prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign. Their summer business provides hope, but Opta still expects them to be involved in a tense battle near the bottom of the table.
5. Crystal Palace (17th) – 44 points
Crystal Palace have worked to maintain a competitive squad while making changes during the summer window. Despite their recruitment, Opta sees them finishing just above the relegation zone.
6. Sunderland (16th) – 45 points
Sunderland’s return to the Premier League has brought significant attention to their summer business. They have strengthened with the aim of establishing themselves in the top flight, although Opta predicts a challenging first season back.
7. Nottingham Forest (15th) – 46 points
Nottingham Forest have been active in reshaping their squad this summer as they look to build on their Premier League status. Opta expects their additions to help them survive, but not push them into the European picture.
8. Tottenham Hotspur (14th) – 47 points
Tottenham have made changes to their squad as they look to recover from an inconsistent period. However, despite their summer activity and ambitions, Opta’s model has them finishing surprisingly low in 14th.
9. Hull City (13th) – 47 points
Hull City have used the summer window to prepare for life in the Premier League and add more depth to their squad. Opta predicts they will avoid trouble but remain in the lower half of the table.
10. AFC Bournemouth (12th) – 49 points
Bournemouth have continued to build their squad rather than completely overhaul it. Their summer recruitment could give them enough stability to finish comfortably in mid-table, according to Opta.
11. Leeds United (11th) – 50 points
Leeds have strengthened after returning to the Premier League, adding players capable of competing at the highest level. Opta believes those additions will help them secure a respectable mid-table finish.
12. Aston Villa (10th) – 52 points
Aston Villa have focused on maintaining a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts while making targeted additions. Opta expects their summer work to help them remain in the top half, although not quite in the European places.
13. Everton (9th) – 52 points
Everton have continued rebuilding their squad in the hope of moving further away from the relegation battles of recent seasons. Their summer activity gives them a stronger platform, with Opta predicting a top-half finish.
14. Brentford (8th) – 53 points
Brentford have once again looked to smart recruitment and squad planning rather than simply spending heavily. Opta expects that approach to pay off with an impressive eighth-place finish.
15. Brighton & Hove Albion (7th) – 54 points
Brighton have remained committed to their recruitment model, bringing in young talent with the potential to develop. Opta’s prediction suggests their summer strategy could help them challenge for a European position.
16. Newcastle United (6th) – 56 points
Newcastle’s summer was arguably one of the most dramatic in the Premier League. After losing Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies responded by spending around £270million on eight young signings.
The arrival of Amar Dedic, Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo, alongside the other additions, has given Matthias Jaissle a completely different squad to work with. Opta believes Newcastle can turn the upheaval into a sixth-place finish and secure European football.
17. Manchester United (5th) – 57 points
Manchester United have continued their rebuilding process with further additions designed to address weaknesses across the squad. Despite their summer activity, Opta only has them finishing fifth, suggesting the competition at the top could be extremely tight.
18. Liverpool (4th) – 59 points
Liverpool entered the summer looking to maintain their position among England’s elite while strengthening key areas. Their recruitment gives them plenty of quality, and Opta expects them to remain firmly in the Champions League places.
19. Chelsea (3rd) – 61 points
Chelsea have once again been among the Premier League’s biggest spenders, continuing their long-term strategy of investing in young talent. Opta’s prediction places them third, suggesting their summer recruitment could help them mount another serious challenge.
20. Manchester City (2nd) – 71 points
Manchester City have continued refreshing their squad with major additions during the summer transfer window. Their depth and quality remain formidable, but Opta narrowly predicts that they will finish second despite collecting an impressive 71 points.
21. Arsenal (1st) – 76 points
Arsenal have strengthened their squad with the clear ambition of competing for the Premier League title. Their summer recruitment has added further quality and depth, and Opta’s model has them finishing top with 76 points.
