Abdulhafiz TeslimTransfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans, revealing that the Magpies are preparing an official opening bid for Freiburg and Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Freiburg, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. His performances played a key role in helping the Bundesliga side secure a seventh-place finish and reach the Europa League final.
Manzambi has also continued his impressive form on the international stage, emerging as one of the standout performers at the World Cup. The Swiss midfielder has registered three goals and two assists in four appearances, helping Switzerland reach the last 16, where they are set to face Colombia on Tuesday.
According to reports from Sky Sports News, Freiburg’s valuation of the highly-rated midfielder could rise further due to his outstanding World Cup displays and growing interest from several clubs across Europe.
When asked about his future, Manzambi remained focused on the tournament, saying: “I honestly don’t know. My contract runs until 2030. We’ll see. Right now, I have to prepare for the World Cup, then we’ll see what the future holds for me.”
Newcastle’s interest in the midfielder is understood to be genuine, but the club may have to move quickly amid increasing competition for his signature.
Fabrizio Romano reported: “Newcastle are preparing an official opening bid for Switzerland gem Johan Manzambi to be sent soon. Initial contacts have been made over recent days, and a proposal to SC Freiburg will follow.
“He’s scored three goals and provided two assists in an excellent World Cup campaign so far.”
However, Newcastle supporters may remain cautious after previous transfer pursuits have failed to materialise, with competition from rival clubs often complicating negotiations for the Magpies’ top targets.
