Newcastle United have been left facing some serious questions after their humiliating 4–1 defeat to Coventry City, but according to one of the Premier League’s most respected former defenders, the problem may be much deeper than simply individual mistakes at the back.
The defeat has sparked plenty of frustration among the Toon Army, particularly because Newcastle had significant possession and created enough opportunities to make the game far more competitive. Yet once again, they struggled to turn their dominance into control, while their opponents were ruthless whenever Newcastle gave them an opening.
And now Jamie Carragher has identified something he believes Matthias Jaissle needs to address immediately.
The former Liverpool defender was analysing Newcastle’s recent performances when he highlighted the worrying trend developing under the new head coach. Newcastle have now conceded eight goals across their last two away matches, with both games ending in painful 4–1 defeats.
That statistic alone tells its own story.
However, Carragher believes Newcastle’s biggest problem is not simply that their defenders are making mistakes. He believes the overall structure of the team is leaving them vulnerable, particularly when they are forced into physical battles in midfield.
Newcastle currently have plenty of attacking options, but Carragher suggested that Jaissle could benefit from sacrificing one forward and adding an extra midfielder.
The idea would be to give Newcastle greater control in the middle of the pitch, provide more protection for the defence and make the team harder to play through.
It is a significant suggestion because Jaissle has shown a willingness to use an attacking setup, but the recent results suggest that Newcastle may need to find a better balance between attacking ambition and defensive security.
Against Coventry, Newcastle had 66 per cent possession and registered 19 shots, yet they still found themselves on the wrong end of a 4–1 scoreline. The numbers show why possession alone cannot guarantee results.
Carragher’s argument is that Newcastle are being physically outplayed in important moments.
He believes the team needs more strength and presence through the middle rather than simply adding more attacking players.
That could mean a return to something closer to the 4–3–3 structure Newcastle have previously used, allowing an additional midfielder to help win second balls, protect the back four and give the attackers better support.
There is also a positional issue that has been raised around some Newcastle players.
Sky Sports analyst Keith Downie questioned whether certain players are being used in their natural positions, pointing to Yoane Wissa operating as a No.10, Joe Willock being used as a No.6 and Matias Fernandez-Pardo playing as a No.9.
Those tactical questions make Carragher’s suggestion even more interesting.
Jaissle now has a huge decision to make before Newcastle face Aston Villa.
Does he continue with the same attacking approach and trust his players to respond, or does he make a bold tactical adjustment in an attempt to restore balance and stability?
The pressure is increasing because Newcastle cannot afford another defensive collapse.
Jaissle has already acknowledged that conceding eight goals in two away matches is unacceptable and that the team must improve in both boxes.
For Newcastle supporters, the hope is that the Coventry defeat becomes the wake-up call rather than the beginning of another difficult spell.
Carragher’s solution may look simple on paper, but it could have a major impact if Jaissle decides to implement it.
One extra midfielder could give Newcastle more control, more protection and greater physical presence — while also allowing the attacking players to concentrate on what they do best.
Now everything comes down to whether Jaissle is prepared to make that difficult decision.
The Aston Villa clash could provide the first major answer.
And if Newcastle suddenly look more balanced, more compact and harder to break down, Carragher’s warning may prove to have been exactly what the club needed to hear.
The Toon Army will certainly be hoping so.
