🚨 BREAKING: David Ornstein CONFIRMS Newcastle in Talks to Sign Man City Star — BLOCKBUSTER Move Could Be ON!

Newcastle United’s search for a new holding midfielder has taken another major twist, with Manchester City star Nico Gonzalez emerging as the latest name linked with a move to St James’ Park.

According to respected journalist David Ornstein, Newcastle United have opened talks with Manchester City regarding a potential deal for the 24-year-old midfielder. While the negotiations are not yet considered advanced, contact between the two clubs has reportedly taken place as Newcastle continue to explore several midfield options.

The Magpies have been searching for another player capable of strengthening their midfield ahead of the new Premier League season. Newcastle have already been linked with several names, including Nicolas Seiwald, Lucas Bergvall and Carlos Baleba, but Gonzalez has now entered the picture.

Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Portuguese giants Porto in January in a deal reportedly worth around £52 million. The move represented a major investment from City, who saw the Spanish midfielder as a player capable of adding energy, technical quality and defensive strength to their midfield.

However, Gonzalez struggled to establish himself as a regular Premier League starter following his arrival at the Etihad Stadium. He started only two Premier League matches during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, although he still made 41 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions during the entire season.

That situation could potentially encourage Newcastle to test City’s resolve with an offer.

The Magpies are looking to strengthen their squad under new head coach Matthias Jaissle, and Gonzalez’s profile could be particularly attractive. He is capable of playing in a deeper midfield role while also contributing to the team’s build-up play and defensive work.

Manchester City’s own midfield changes could also have an influence on the situation. Rodri has reportedly departed for Barcelona, while Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to arrive from Lille and Elliott Anderson has already been secured. Those changes could leave City with decisions to make regarding the future of some of their midfielders.

However, Gonzalez does not appear to be actively looking for a move away from Manchester.

The midfielder recently made it clear that he is happy at City and wants to fight for his place. He has previously acknowledged the fierce competition for places at the club but insisted that competition is part of playing for one of the best teams in the world.

That could make Newcastle’s pursuit complicated.

Nevertheless, Newcastle’s decision to open discussions demonstrates their determination to find the right midfielder before the transfer window closes. Gonzalez would offer Jaissle another technically gifted and physically capable option in the engine room.

For now, there is no agreement between Newcastle and Manchester City, and the talks remain exploratory. However, with Newcastle continuing to assess their options, Gonzalez could become one of the most intriguing names to watch in the final stages of the transfer window.

If Newcastle can convince Manchester City to consider a sale and persuade Gonzalez that regular first-team football awaits at St James’ Park, the Magpies could potentially pull off a major signing.

The situation remains one to watch, with further developments expected as Newcastle continue their search for midfield reinforcements.
