Newcastle United have thrown their support behind club captain Bruno Guimarães after the midfielder issued an emotional statement following Brazil’s heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Brazil’s hopes of ending their long wait for another world title came to a painful end with a shock 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium. The match turned on a costly first-half moment when Guimarães saw his penalty brilliantly saved before Norway struck late through a decisive brace from Erling Haaland, sealing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
The missed spot-kick immediately put Guimarães under intense scrutiny in Brazil, with many supporters blaming the Newcastle skipper for the early exit. Despite the criticism, the 28-year-old refused to hide from responsibility and waited two days before addressing fans in an honest and emotional message on social media.
“I’ve written and deleted so many times I’ve lost count,” Guimarães wrote. “I’ve always been present in victories, so it’s only right that I also speak after defeat.”
The midfielder described the elimination as the most painful moment of his career, admitting that missing the penalty and seeing Brazil knocked out was “the worst pain” of his life. He added that returning home to his children helped him regain perspective after the devastating loss.
“The first thing my kids said when I woke up was, ‘Daddy, let’s play football.’ That’s when I realised football will always be my greatest love, whether the days are good or bad.”
Guimarães also insisted he accepts full responsibility for the defeat and promised supporters that his international dream remains alive.
“The dream is not over. It is still alive in my heart. Now it’s time to reflect, recover with my family and come back even stronger.”
Newcastle United were among the first to show their support, with the club’s official Instagram account responding to the heartfelt message. Several teammates also offered words of encouragement as Guimarães begins to recover from one of the toughest moments of his career.
Away from international football, speculation over the Brazilian’s future continues to grow. Arsenal are understood to remain interested in signing the Newcastle captain this summer, although the Magpies are determined to keep one of their most influential players.
Reports suggest Newcastle are preparing fresh contract talks in an effort to reward Guimarães and reinforce their commitment to him as the cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s long-term project.
The Magpies have already strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Ewan Jaouen and Bazoumana Touré, while highly-rated Ajax youngster Sean Steur is also expected to join as Newcastle continue investing in emerging talent.
With more signings anticipated before the transfer window closes, Newcastle hope to convince Guimarães that the club remains capable of competing at the highest level despite a disappointing campaign last season.
