“Big mistake” — Carragher delivers blunt verdict
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher did not hold back as he analysed West Ham’s recent tactical approach, directly questioning Nuno’s decisions in the build-up to the crucial run-in.
Carragher pointed specifically to the decision to persist with a back three system, calling it a “big mistake” given West Ham’s struggles with it throughout the season.
“Nuno knows this system brilliantly,” Carragher said. “He used it so often at Wolves, but the real success at West Ham has come with 4-4-2. So it was a big mistake what he did, and he realised that after 25–30 minutes, but it was too late.”
System under fire as poor run continues
West Ham’s recent defeat to Newcastle United exposed familiar weaknesses, with the team losing 3–1 at St James’ Park after a disastrous opening period. Early goals left the Hammers chasing the game, and although they managed a late consolation, the damage had already been done.
Carragher also highlighted a worrying pattern: West Ham’s poor record when using a back three this season. The system has repeatedly failed to deliver consistency, with damaging defeats against teams including Leeds United, Arsenal, and Newcastle, as well as draws against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Manchester City.
While the draw against City offered a brief positive, the broader trend is alarming — West Ham have now gone six matches without a win when starting in that shape.
