Newcastle United have reportedly moved into a strong position in the race to sign AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, with fresh reports suggesting the Italian club are prepared to listen to offers before the summer transfer window closes.

According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe remains a long-time admirer of the England international and is keen to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the new Premier League campaign. While no agreement has been reached, Newcastle are said to be among the clubs closely monitoring Tomori’s situation.

Howe is believed to be prioritising defensive reinforcements as several of his current centre-backs enter the latter stages of their careers, while uncertainty also surrounds the futures of some younger defenders at St James’ Park.

Tomori has established himself as one of AC Milan’s most reliable defenders since making his permanent move from Chelsea in 2021. The 28-year-old featured regularly for the Rossoneri last season and remains under contract until June 2027.

Although Milan have not officially placed the defender on the transfer list, reports in Italy and England suggest the Serie A club would consider offers if the right proposal arrives this summer.

Newcastle explored the possibility of signing Tomori during previous transfer windows, but the defender chose to remain at the San Siro. With his future now less certain, a return to the Premier League is once again being discussed, although several clubs across England and Europe are also believed to be interested.

Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, former scout Mick Brown claimed Tomori would be a natural target for Howe if Newcastle continue their search for defensive reinforcements.

While Tomori’s future remains unresolved, Newcastle are also closing in on another addition to the squad. The Magpies are expected to complete the signing of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg after reaching an agreement for the highly-rated Swiss midfielder.

Reports indicate Manzambi is eager to complete the move to Tyneside, with the transfer now entering its final stages. If completed, it would provide Howe with another important addition as Newcastle continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

For now, Tomori’s future remains one to watch. Newcastle’s interest appears genuine, but with several clubs monitoring the defender and no formal agreement yet in place, the race for the AC Milan star is still very much open.
