Celtic are reportedly considering a move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope, with the experienced former England international increasingly expected to leave St James’ Park this summer.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper has entered a potentially decisive period in his Newcastle career after the club added further competition between the posts during the current transfer window. Newcastle have already brought in Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, strengthening their goalkeeping options and adding further uncertainty around Pope’s future.
Pope has been an important figure for Newcastle since arriving at the club, but his position now appears to be under serious scrutiny as new head coach Matthias Jaissle continues to shape the squad according to his own plans.
The goalkeeper’s situation was highlighted following Newcastle’s victory over Valencia on Saturday night. Speaking after the game, Jaissle confirmed that he had spoken directly with Pope about the situation surrounding his future.
“I had a talk with Nick. I really appreciate what he did in his career so far,” Jaissle said.
“He knows exactly the situation right now and we need to deal with it in the best possible way, but I always appreciate the player and the human being behind.”
Those comments have fuelled further speculation that Pope could be heading towards the exit door before the transfer window closes.
Celtic are now understood to be weighing up whether to make a move for the experienced goalkeeper. The Scottish champions could view Pope’s experience and Premier League background as attractive qualities as they assess their options in goal.
However, Celtic are not believed to be the only club monitoring the situation.
Wolves, Hull City and Ipswich Town have also reportedly registered an interest in Pope, with bids expected to arrive in the near future if the goalkeeper becomes available.
For Newcastle, the potential departure would mark the end of an important chapter. Pope has enjoyed several strong spells during his time on Tyneside and has established himself as a respected figure among supporters.
Nevertheless, the arrival of Hornicek and Jaouen appears to have changed the goalkeeping picture. With Jaissle now implementing his own ideas and making difficult decisions regarding the squad, Pope may have to consider a new challenge.
Celtic could therefore emerge as an intriguing destination, particularly if they decide that Pope’s experience is exactly what they need.
With several clubs reportedly circling and Newcastle seemingly prepared to consider his departure, the coming days could be crucial for Pope.
For now, Jaissle’s message is clear: he respects the goalkeeper and what he has contributed to Newcastle, but Pope understands the situation facing him.
The next move could ultimately come down to which interested club is prepared to make the strongest offer and convince the veteran goalkeeper that a fresh chapter away from St James’ Park is the right decision.
