Newcastle United could be preparing for an interesting January transfer window, with the club reportedly keeping a close eye on a player who has already attracted significant Premier League attention.
The Magpies are understood to be monitoring the market for potential reinforcements, while their recruitment team continues to assess players who could add something different to Matthias Jaissle’s squad.
One particular situation has now started to attract attention.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are among the clubs who have stepped up their scouting of a Sporting CP winger ahead of the January window. Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have also been checking on the player, while Aston Villa are continuing to monitor his situation.

And there is an intriguing subplot.
The player was reportedly Sunderland’s top target during the summer, but the Black Cats were unable to convince Sporting to lower their demands. Sporting were said to be insisting that interested clubs meet a €60 million (£51m) release clause in full.
That player is Geny Catamo.
The 25-year-old Mozambique international has made an impressive start to the campaign, registering two goals and three assists from his opening seven appearances, according to the report that has sparked the latest Newcastle interest.
Catamo’s form is one reason why his name has remained firmly on the radar of Premier League clubs.
Newcastle’s reported interest does not mean a deal is close, however. There is currently no indication that Newcastle have submitted an offer or opened formal negotiations with Sporting. The club is understood to be monitoring the situation rather than having reached an agreement.
The financial side could also prove decisive.
Sporting’s reported €60m valuation represents a substantial January investment, particularly with several Premier League clubs now keeping tabs on the same player. Sunderland remain interested, meaning a Newcastle pursuit could add another layer to the growing rivalry between the two clubs.
There is, however, one factor that could encourage Newcastle and the other English clubs.
TEAMtalk reports that Catamo is open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League, attracted by the opportunity to test himself in English football.
For Newcastle, the coming months will therefore be important. Continued performances could push Catamo even further onto the radar of Premier League recruitment departments, while Sporting’s stance over the reported release clause will determine whether serious negotiations become possible.
For now, Newcastle are watching.
But with January approaching and several Premier League clubs circling, this could become one of the more interesting transfer battles to follow.
