adminThe battle for survival in the Championship is intensifying as the season nears its conclusion, with three familiar Premier League names fighting to avoid the drop.
Championship experts have now weighed in, offering their verdict on which teams could secure their place in the second tier next season.
Portsmouth’s determination to survive has stood out, with the Blues fighting hard to stay in the Championship. EFL expert Jobi McAnuff tipped John Mousinho’s side to cling on, though just barely, this season.
“Portsmouth have been there or thereabouts, but they feel like a team being sucked into it,” McAnuff said. “They’re a strange side. They made some really good signings in January — Ebou Adams was one, Milli Alli another. That gave them a spark and helped pick up some results, but this recent run has been worrying.”
He added: “One thing I will say about this Portsmouth side — they will fight. No one in that group is giving up or thinking the battle is too big. I think John Mousinho will just about have enough to keep them up.”
“Leicester have enough quality. If I were judging which squad has the most talent, it would be Leicester City for sure. But there are bigger problems there.
Gary Rowett hasn’t gotten the consistency expected. Maybe the silver lining is that they’ve kept a couple of clean sheets, but the group needs to take accountability. It’s a question of mentality.”
He also praised West Brom’s interim head coach, James Morrison, who has guided the team to back-to-back wins after 13 matches without success:
“West Brom were in reverse, and it looked bleak. But if you string together even a short run of results, you give yourself a chance and that’s exactly what West Brom have done. It was a big call to give him the job, but he’s giving them a fighting chance.”
