The England international’s transfer to Barcelona, completed earlier this summer in a deal worth around €70–80 million, is understood to have strengthened communication between both clubs, with negotiations described as smooth and respectful on both sides.
Following Gordon’s arrival, Barcelona are now exploring further opportunities in the market involving Newcastle players. Discussions are believed to include a potential exchange deal centred around one of Newcastle’s defensive prospects and a La Masia graduate.
Newcastle United have released their retained list for the summer of 2026, confirming the futures of several senior players as the club prepares for a busy transfer window.
With the season now over, attention has fully shifted to squad restructuring, with the club now providing clarity on eight senior players.
Exits for Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth had already been announced earlier, alongside Fabian Schär’s new one-year deal. The club has now officially confirmed the departure of six senior players in total.
John Ruddy, Matt Targett, and Max Thompson are among those leaving St James’ Park after their contracts were not renewed.
Aaron Ramsdale also departs following the end of his loan spell from Southampton. Although an option to buy was included in his loan agreement, Newcastle have decided not to activate it and will instead look elsewhere for goalkeeping reinforcements.
Targett exits after spending last season on loan at Middlesbrough, while Ruddy and Thompson did not make any senior appearances during the 2025/26 campaign.
Goalkeeper Mark Gillespie has agreed a new one-year contract extension.
The 34-year-old remains valued for his experience, professionalism, and leadership within the training environment, continuing in a supporting squad role. He joins Fabian Schär in extending his stay at the club for another season.
Newcastle are expected to sign at least one new goalkeeper this summer, with plans in place to recruit both a long-term successor to Nick Pope and a younger option for the future.
