Matthias Jaissle has every reason to be delighted after Newcastle United secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The German manager watched his side produce a composed and disciplined display in North London, with Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa finding the net in the second half to give Newcastle their first Premier League victory of the season.
However, while the goalscorers naturally attracted most of the attention, there were several impressive individual performances that contributed to Newcastle’s success.
New signing Nico González was handed his Premier League debut after completing his move from Manchester City, and the midfielder immediately showed why Jaissle was prepared to trust him from the start.

González played an important role in the move that eventually produced Newcastle’s opening goal. His superb cross-field pass found Amar Dedić, who headed the ball into Elanga’s path before the Swedish forward turned and fired home in the 62nd minute.
It was an impressive moment that highlighted the qualities Newcastle have added to their midfield this summer.
Rather than simply sitting deep and attempting to protect a point, Jaissle’s side continued to look for opportunities to hurt Tottenham, with González’s passing range giving the Magpies another route through the home side’s defensive structure.
Elanga then doubled Newcastle’s advantage 10 minutes later, while Wissa continued his impressive start to life under Jaissle by producing another important attacking contribution.
The victory also continued a remarkable early transformation for the two forwards.
Elanga has now scored in each of Newcastle’s opening two Premier League matches, while Wissa finally opened his league account for the club after impressing during the 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher even described the pair as looking like “two new players” under Jaissle.
But the Newcastle boss was equally pleased with the collective performance.
Jaissle described the 2-0 victory as “well deserved” and praised his players for their “full commitment” and decision-making throughout the contest.
Newcastle had to withstand periods of Tottenham pressure, particularly before half-time, but remained organised and disciplined before taking control after the break.
That mentality was arguably one of the biggest positives of the afternoon.
The Magpies did not panic when Tottenham enjoyed possession, and once they found the breakthrough, they showed the maturity required to manage the game and eventually leave North London with all three points.
For Jaissle, it was another encouraging step after the club’s difficult summer and the departure of Eddie Howe.
Newcastle had been tipped by some to struggle under their new manager, particularly after losing several important players during the transfer window. Instead, they have now taken four points from their opening two Premier League matches following the thrilling 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
And with González already looking comfortable on his debut, Elanga and Wissa rediscovering their best form, and the rest of the squad buying into Jaissle’s methods, Newcastle supporters have every reason to believe that something exciting could be developing at St James’ Park.
The manager may still have plenty of work to do, but the early signs are extremely encouraging.
Newcastle look organised, confident and united under their new boss — and their impressive victory over Tottenham could prove to be the moment that Jaissle’s Newcastle truly announced themselves.
