Leicester City confirm terrible sad news before Oxford United Clash

Leicester City are in the middle of a huge rebuilding project under Russell Martin as the club attempts to recover from one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.

After back-to-back relegations, the Foxes have dropped into League One and are now tasked with rebuilding from the ground up, reshaping the squad and restoring the standards that have previously made them one of English football’s most successful sides.

The summer has therefore been about far more than simply adding new players. Martin has been working to create a squad capable of handling the pressure of a promotion campaign while giving Leicester a fresh identity after the disappointment of recent seasons.

The club’s ultimate objective is clear: regain stability, challenge at the top of League One and begin the long journey back towards the Championship and, eventually, the Premier League.

That rebuilding process, however, has suffered an extremely painful setback just as Leicester began to find some momentum.

The Foxes finally recorded their first League One victory of the season on Tuesday, beating Plymouth Argyle 2-0. But the result came at a heavy cost after one of Martin’s key players was forced off just six minutes into the game.

At first, there were hopes that the problem would not prove serious. Those hopes have now been completely dashed.

Martin has confirmed the news Leicester supporters were desperately hoping they would not hear, revealing that the player will miss the remainder of the season.

“Not good.

“I feel so disappointed for the big guy. He’ll be out for the season. It was a really innocuous one on his knee.

“The only silver lining is that him and Ben [Nelson] will get to do their rehab together, they’re in very similar situations.”

The player at the centre of the heartbreaking news is first-choice goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk, who has suffered a serious knee injury.

The Polish goalkeeper was substituted after just six minutes during Leicester’s 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle and will now be unavailable for the entire campaign.

Stolarczyk had been benched for Leicester’s opening two matches before reclaiming his place as No. 1 against MK Dons. His season has now been cut short at a crucial stage of Martin’s rebuilding project.

Veteran goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is expected to replace Stolarczyk between the sticks as Leicester attempt to absorb the setback and maintain their promotion push.

Meanwhile, midfielder Conor Chaplin and centre-back Caleb Okoli will also miss Saturday’s clash with Oxford United.

Ben Nelson, who spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Oxford United and made 17 appearances for the club, was also ruled out for the majority of the season back in August and will not feature against his former side.
