Just-In Newcastle Win Transfer Battle as Highly Rated 24-Year-Old Chooses St James’ Park Move

Newcastle United are in the middle of a squad rebuild after a mixed and inconsistent 2025/26 season.

Their Premier League form lacked consistency, with strong performances followed by disappointing dips. While there were better moments in cup competitions that showed the squad’s potential, the overall campaign exposed clear problems in depth and balance.

Eddie Howe and the club have since moved into a summer reset, focusing on fixing key weaknesses and reshaping the team.

Several senior players have already left St James’ Park, with more expected to follow. The exits reflect a clear shift toward refreshing the squad and moving away from ageing or inconsistent options.

Recruitment is now focused on younger, more energetic players who can develop within the system while still competing at a high level. The goal is to build a more stable squad capable of performing across all competitions.

Changes are also being made in goal. With several goalkeepers leaving, Newcastle have acted early to strengthen the position before pre-season.

Howe wants his core squad in place quickly so preparations for the new season are not disrupted, which has accelerated activity in the transfer market.

Newcastle United have agreed a £24 million deal with Stade de Reims for highly rated goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, beating competition from several Premier League clubs.

The 20-year-old is set to sign a four-year contract at St James’ Park, with the move expected to be completed after his medical in the coming days. He will then link up with the squad for pre-season training.

Jaouen becomes Newcastle’s first signing of the summer after a strong breakout season in France’s second division, where he played every minute and conceded just 35 goals. His performances have drawn attention for his consistency, shot-stopping, and command of his area.

He started his career at EA Guingamp before joining Reims in 2023, and later gained experience through loan spells at Rodez AF and USL Dunkerque.

The young goalkeeper has also represented France at youth level and is currently part of the Under-21 setup.

Chelsea FC were also interested, but Newcastle moved quickly to secure the deal.

At St James’ Park, he is expected to compete with Nick Pope for the number one spot as Newcastle continue building a younger and more competitive squad.
