The 23-year-old made four Premier League appearances for Newcastle during the 2023/24 season, playing a total of 12 minutes.
Although he regularly trained with the first team, featured in several pre-season squads, and was named on the bench multiple times, he was unable to establish himself in Eddie Howe’s senior side.
Having joined Newcastle’s academy in 2016, White gained valuable experience through a series of loan spells at Hartlepool United, Exeter City, Crewe Alexandra, MK Dons, Leyton Orient, and Bradford City.
Newcastle officially confirmed his departure on Thursday, with White returning permanently to Crewe Alexandra, where he previously enjoyed a successful loan spell during the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.
During that stint, the midfielder scored three goals in 20 appearances, leaving a positive impression on the League Two club. Crewe, who finished 11th in League Two last season, will be hoping White can play a key role in helping them climb the table during the upcoming campaign.
White’s move also highlights the challenge academy players face when trying to break into Newcastle’s first team.
Despite being highly regarded by supporters and often mentioned in debates about giving youngsters more opportunities, the midfielder ultimately found it difficult to secure regular Premier League football.
His permanent move to a League Two side underlines the significant step up required to compete at the highest level.
Eddie Howe works closely with the club’s young players every day and is best placed to judge when they are ready for first-team football.
While White’s Newcastle journey has come to an end, he leaves with the club’s best wishes and now has the opportunity to build the next chapter of his career with Crewe Alexandra.
