Abdulhafiz TeslimEverton’s Charly Alcaraz has become something of a forgotten man at Hill Dickinson, but Idrissa Gana Gueye’s injury could hand the Argentine his biggest opportunity yet against Sunderland.
The Toffees welcome the Black Cats knowing it is one of their final chances to keep alive their hopes of securing European football next season.
David Moyes confirmed ahead of the clash that Gueye has only an “outside chance” of featuring in the final game of the campaign, opening the door for changes in midfield.
Tim Iroegbunam started in Everton’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, while Merlin Rohl was also given another opportunity in the first team. However, Moyes may now be tempted to reshuffle his options.
The Everton boss has consistently spoken highly of Alcaraz in press conferences, and handing him a start on Sunday could prove to be a major call.
Alcaraz looks the most likely option to replace Rohl, with Iroegbunam expected to retain his place in midfield due to Gueye’s expected absence.
Rohl’s recent displays against Crystal Palace and Manchester City have divided Everton supporters, whereas Alcaraz’s versatility and attacking intent may offer Moyes something different.
The 23-year-old averages 1.19 chances created per 90 minutes while maintaining an impressive 81.4 per cent pass accuracy.
He also boasts a dribble success rate of 42.9 per cent, completing 0.80 successful dribbles per match.
Although Alcaraz has managed just one league goal involvement this season, he produced five goal contributions in 16 appearances across all competitions for the Blues last campaign.
Having made only six Premier League starts this term, it is easy to see why the Argentine has struggled to truly establish himself at Hill Dickinson.
There is little doubt Alcaraz possesses the quality to make an impact under Moyes, but the question remains whether the Everton manager is prepared to fully trust him.
His long-term future is now becoming increasingly uncertain.
Alcaraz was signed permanently by Everton last summer after impressing during his loan spell, yet he actually enjoyed more regular minutes during that temporary stint than he has since joining full-time.
With Everton’s hopes of European qualification fading, the need for a significantly larger squad next season could also decrease.
If Alcaraz is informed that his role will remain limited next season, it would come as no surprise to see the former Southampton FC star push for an exit this summer.
A loan move could be considered, although a permanent departure may also be on the table.
