The dramatic incident came during Arsenal’s tense clash with West Ham, a match that carried huge importance at both ends of the Premier League table.
However, much of the post-match discussion quickly shifted toward the referee’s decision to rule out what many fans believed should have been a late West Ham goal.
Carragher did not hold back when discussing the incident, accusing officials of applying different standards depending on the team involved.
“This is exactly why supporters get frustrated with PGMOL every single weekend,” Carragher said. “The inconsistency is impossible to ignore now.

The Sky Sports pundit questioned why similar physical contact was suddenly judged differently once Arsenal were on the receiving end.
“But the moment another team does something similar against Arsenal, suddenly the microscope comes out and officials decide it’s a foul,” he continued. “That’s the problem people have. Fans just want consistency. If it’s a foul, make it a foul every week. If it’s acceptable contact, then allow it for everyone.”
The controversial moment sparked huge debate online, with many supporters arguing that there was not enough contact to justify overturning the goal. Carragher agreed, claiming the decision highlighted a wider issue with officiating standards in the Premier League.
“I looked at the West Ham goal and I honestly didn’t see enough there to disallow it,” he added. “There’s contact in every single corner situation in football today. Defenders grapple, attackers grapple, players block runs all over the pitch. Arsenal themselves benefit from those situations constantly because they’re excellent at set-pieces.”
Carragher also suggested that external pressure and the atmosphere surrounding certain clubs may influence how decisions are made during matches.
“What annoys people is that the interpretation changes depending on the team, the atmosphere, or the pressure on the officials,” he explained. “PGMOL keep talking about transparency and improving standards, but supporters are still leaving games confused because the same incident gets judged differently every week.”
The former defender finished by making perhaps his strongest claim yet, insisting he believes the goal would have stood if it had happened against another club.
“If West Ham score that against another side, I genuinely think the goal stands,” Carragher concluded. “That’s the uncomfortable conversation people don’t want to have. The consistency simply isn’t there, and until PGMOL sort that out, managers, players and fans will keep feeling robbed by decisions like this.”
The incident has since triggered fierce reactions across social media, with supporters once again questioning the consistency of VAR and refereeing decisions in the Premier League.
