According to Dutch publication AD, Newcastle United are on the verge of signing Ajax midfielder Seun Steur.
Late on Monday night, journalist Johan Inan reported that Newcastle had reached a preliminary agreement with Ajax worth up to €27 million (£23 million) for the highly rated 18-year-old.
A five-year contract is reportedly ready for the midfielder, who is expected to leave Ajax’s training camp in the coming days to undergo a medical on Tyneside before completing the transfer.
AD describes the move as a major surprise, with many in the Netherlands expecting Steur to sign a new long-term contract with Ajax instead.
The tall, technically gifted midfielder made 19 Eredivisie appearances last season and also featured in the UEFA Champions League, further underlining why he is regarded as one of Dutch football’s brightest young prospects.
Agency connections and signs of huge potential
One interesting aspect of the move is Steur’s representation.
The Dutch youngster is represented by THE TEAM, the agency formerly known as Wasserman. The agency also represents Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe, and reported Magpies target Johan Manzambi.
While agency links alone do not determine transfers, having an established relationship with representatives can often help negotiations and could prove beneficial if Newcastle pursue Manzambi in the future.
On the pitch, Steur has earned a reputation as one of the Eredivisie’s standout young midfielders. At one stage last season, no midfielder in the division recorded a higher progressive pass accuracy or a better defensive duel win rate, highlighting the 18-year-old’s outstanding potential both in possession and out of it.
