Abdulhafiz TeslimFormer Newcastle United favourite Allan Saint-Maximin has found a new club after leaving RC Lens, with a move to Major League Soccer now on the verge of completion.
The French winger became a cult hero during his four-year spell at Newcastle, scoring 13 goals and providing 21 assists in 124 appearances across all competitions. His flair, unpredictability and connection with supporters made him one of the most popular players at St James’ Park in recent years.
Saint-Maximin left Newcastle for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in the summer of 2023, shortly after Eddie Howe’s side secured Champions League qualification. Since then, he has enjoyed spells with Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Mexican club Club America before returning to France in February with Lens.
The 29-year-old made an immediate impact upon his return to Ligue 1, registering four goals and three assists in just 13 appearances. His time at the club culminated in a historic moment as Lens lifted the Coupe de France for the first time in their history, defeating Nice 3-1 in last month’s final.
That triumph now appears to be the final chapter of Saint-Maximin’s short but memorable stay at Lens.
Confirming his departure in an emotional message to supporters, the former Newcastle winger thanked the club’s hierarchy, coaching staff, teammates and fans for their support during his six-month spell.
“I had the honour of helping write a page in the club’s history by bringing the first Coupe de France back to Lens,” Saint-Maximin said.
He also praised head coach Will Still, describing him as “one of the best coaches” he has worked with during his career, while thanking Lens supporters for the passion and atmosphere they created at Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Meanwhile, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Saint-Maximin is set to begin a new adventure in Major League Soccer.
Romano revealed that Charlotte FC have reached an agreement to sign the Frenchman as a free agent, with the winger already completing his medical in London. A three-year contract has been agreed and the move has received Romano’s trademark “Here We Go” confirmation.
“Charlotte FC agree deal to sign Allan Saint-Maximin as free agent, here we go!” Romano posted on social media. “Deal done on a three-year contract as medical already completed in London. New move to MLS for Saint-Maximin.”
The move will see Saint-Maximin become one of the highest-profile arrivals in MLS this summer as he looks to reignite his career in North America.The main correction was changing the subjective “greatest achievement” line to a more neutral description of Lens’ historic Coupe de France triumph. I also tightened the flow and removed a few repetitive sections.
